My newly purchased 1996 850 wagon (base, 5-speed) has a Volvo "Premium Sound" CD/Cassette head unit. I was just checking my rear reverse light bulbs (see earlier post) and discovered that there aren't any speakers in the rear columns (behind the speaker grills). Was the CD/Cassette probably added by a previous owner and not installed at the factory? If so, is it a relatively simple job to add the rear column speakers, or would I have to run new wire from the head unit?
thanks,
Glen
I'd say the PO took out those speakers. As far as I recall, all 850 wagons had them.

Re: 850 wagon - non-existant rear column speakers (xlt)

Depended on the market which models had them fitted, the wiring is all in place and they are dead easy to fit, they just clip into place and you connect up the wires. I'm after a set for mine actually, Ebay has them from time to time, prices vary wildly though.

Good to hear. What are the speaker dimensions? Is it propietary hole pattern or will an off-the-shelf speaker fit?

The XC does but I would expect that. When taking panels off of the 855 I didn't notice any speaker related wires going back there. I would guess you'd have to run new wire.

No, they are a Volvo one although you may be able to fit another one if your adept enough, go to Ebay UK and do a search for Volvo 850 speakers or just Volvo speakers, there are 2 sets for sale etc. in there, the photos will explain it all

Those D-pillar "speakers" are just tweeters I'm pretty sure. You can pick up a used set from Erie Vovo for about 25 or 35 dollars I think.

Re: (Big Will)

Yes they are "tweeters" but they are the correct speakers for the "D" pillars in 850's & V70's as per supplied in the original installations.

Re: (cocka)

Thanks for the speaker info. I've found a Wisconsin Volvo salvage yard and will do some scavenging. http://www.strandbergauto.com
