Audi S4 wheel well vent is called "Frankenliner"

My buddy has an S4, and when I was helping him rotate his tires, I noticed he has a vented front wheel liner. I figure it either vents to the brakes for cooling or vents the intercooler.

I don't think it would be that hard to mesh one into the existing Volvo wheel well, but I wonder if it would be effective at all?
The vent in the wheel well is a mod to increase airflow through the intercooler located just in front of the liner. I owned a 1994 S4 and many forum discussions about this mod never had any definitive proof that it resulted in any power gain or reduced intake air temps. On the S4 there is very little room behind the intercooler and no direct venting out -hence the idea to vent it through the wheel well liner always seemed right.

Owner built mod = "Franken" liner
