Hey all! Just getting setteled here in California and making new friends. Just had to share my latest fun ride. My neighbor has a 2001 Boxster S with the aero package and 6-speed manual. We were discussing some car tuning and bench racing a bit when the idea came about. So as one thing led into another we decided to take a ride in eachother's cars. Needless to say, my friend was shocked when I opened my 850 up on 101. He mentioned that the car pulled like mad and he was eager to see how they looked together. So we went for it neck to neck. 0-60 or so was all him. Once the turbo was spooling and I was steaming on, I was pushing on the rear bumper just to slowly pass him! The shock was so worth the burned gas. We now have yet another Volvo fan among us. We had the cars very open and having a blast in the quiet early am. Oh, California is going to be nice. Just one question though!? What's up with this 91 octane and NO 93 octane to be found?
Prospero

Hey guys
Kai, 996 eh? Sounds like you've graduated into a new class of cars. You will have to tell me more when we chat later on.
George, The 850 is somewhat re-assembled but fully functional. I spent a weekend on the car a few days before I left to California. I used a "home made" frame pulling machine, a tow truck, and a really strong Bulgarian guy to fix the car. We tag-teamed the car starting on a Saturday and by Sunday night the paint was dry and the parts were all back on. All I need now are the plastic trim pieces for under the headlights and the turn signal lights for the front. Beyond that, the car is complete. I spent a total of $30.00 doing the repairs and then shipped the car over to San Fran. It's nice to see the car back in a Volvo looking shape once again. Hell, even Kai had teary eyes looking at the completed repairs. I must admit that I do miss the strange looks from cops and people as they looked at the 850 before repairs. I've actually had people pull over just to let me go past, guess they figured that I had nothing to loose.
Anyhow...that's the deal for now. Got the car here and looking for a job. Living the cheap life but having a blast.
Cheers
Prospero

The car is finally back~!! Well..not as teary as the day when he pulled the 850 onto my driveway right after the accident.
Yeah, I remember that day!
I'll never forget you passing by on River Road and nearly wrecking once you realized it was my car! Then pulling up in your driveway just to watch the headlights die from exposure to air. I was still in shock at that point; I still can recall the feelings of regret though. Oh, if only I had left 30-seconds later that day or if only I was one lane over… yeah, the good-ole days! Ah, it’s all-good though. I’m still here with the car and were still both kicking. Too bad it wasn’t all just another one of my sick jokes. The way you sounded on the cell phone after the car had come to a stop. (Kai) “WTF!?” (Me) “Uh, I think someone just hit me…I gotta call 911!” (Kai) “WTF!?” (Me) “Ouch, uh…holly shtt! The truck is on fire!!! And there are cars everywhere!” (Kai) “WTF!? Are you OK?” (Me) “No…my ******* car is toast!”
Ahh, the memories!
Cheers
Prospero

Why they changed it, I don't know, however, industry "experts" (expert bulls**tters associated with lawyers, Republicans and big money) claim that there is no noticeable difference between 92 and 91 octane. Well, as an owner and driver of two pushrod-engined Volvos with huge dual sidedraft Weber 40DCOE carbs, I notice a difference. So much that I had to alter my ignition timing slightly (with a sacrifice in power, of course) to avoid detonation/pre-ignition. In a modern-day fuel-injected car your car will probably be fine, but since you're used to the 93 octane, you probably have already noticed about a 1 - 1.5% decrease in performance depending on your driving habits. Interestingly enough, the week of July 4th last year my girlfriend and I drove to Bryce Canyon/Capitol Reef in Utah for a camping trip, and when we left there was 92 octane here -- in parts of Nevada and Utah we noticed that certain places had 94 octane, and when we arrived back home in California was when I noticed we lost an octane point.
What's more, we still have that MTBE crap in our gasoline which is supposed to reduce emissions but in it's basic form it is deadly toxic and environmentally hazardous, but the icing on the cake is that it prematurely breaks down rubber fuel hoses which has been linked to many engine fires, according to an article published by CSAA (California State Automobile Association) back in 1999 or 2000.
-he who stacks pork

I was wondering what the MTBE was all about! I have been using 76 brand fuel since they claim to not have the MTBE in the mix. But about those industry experts...they must all drive Accords or Pick-ups. I can feel my car running slower and pinging when I run it really hard. The weather is cooler here which helps some, but my car was happy with the 94 octane at Sunoco in MD. I guess I will have to cool it for now and then research a real octane additive or run avation fuel. (99 octane low-lead.)
Thanks for the input and advice.
Cheers
Prospero

Err...and Taiwan has 98!
Are you sure you guys are using the same formula(standard) to calculate the octane rating? You might want to double check that.

quote:
Originally posted by devalmyth:
93 94???!!?? ha we have 96!!!
