Being a V70 owner, I don't usually hang out here, and the search function didn't seem to get me anywhere - so here goes:

My brother has a 1995 Italian T5 automatic (the 2.0 T5 made for the country with the silly displacement tax), which has an interesting issue with regards to starting. It will occasionally not crank. Keeping the key in the right position for 10 seconds to a minute will cause it to crank and start every single time. There's no clicking from fuel pump or relays during that time, nor any other sign that anything happens. Apparently, it's worse in cold and/or humid weather, and it may have started after the aftermarket alarm the previous owner had installed was disabled (it stopped working, and so did the car - until it was disabled). The alarm was disabled by a good and honest certified Volvo tech - the same guy I use, so it's not my prime suspect per se.

I'm leaning towards two different approaches, given the lack of info I've got:

1. Related to the disabled alarm system, perhaps current leaks in humid conditions due to a damaged wire.

2. Ignition/key issue due to wear

Any other places I should look? - I intend to borrow the car for a week, using it as my daily driver, as that should give me a better idea as to what the real issue is.

A bit more info now that I've picked it up.

The issue predates the alarm being disabled, and only occurs at or below 0C, which means I'll be unable to replicate the issue during the coming week. I've found a few other things that need attention, though (dipstick tube seals for starters).
