I recently purchased a 93 850 glt. great car , beautiful to drive. sometimes, out of no where, it stalls dead and all lights on dash appear. No code to warn the check engine light appears. I have had it stall while driving down the highway, while idling at a stand still, and when driving slow speeds in town. I've noticed other people with the same problem with the 850 and am wondering if anyone has found the fix. please respond with results or ideas on what to check. thanks.

my dad in law has one and his dist gave out at 97k. it would stall or hesitate every once in a while and then the it quit entirely and needed a new one.

my wifes 94 glt had a bad fuel pump at ~82k. the fuel pump gave out without warning.

maybe check the fuel filter?

I had that happen to my '96 GLE. It was a faulty sensor of some kind. This was before I bought the car off my folks so I am unfortunately not sure exactly which sensor, but it was a common problem and the dealer new about it with other cars and fixed the problem under warranty. I would call up the service guys at your local Volvo dealer if no one hear knows, I bet they've done the fix many times.

THANX for your replies!!! I replaced the fuel controlller relay,(just several days ago) number 103 under the fuse torpedo, and have had no stalls as of yet. This symptom of the 93-94 850 stalling at different speeds and at idle is a baffling and mysterious issue that is dangerous for other 850 owners with the same problem. I first searched for the answer to my problem @ GOOGLE.com key words "volvo 850 stalling problem." I was syrely surprised by the number of discussions concerning the mysterious stalling of the 850. I am anxiously waiting for the car to stall out again. I want to know if the fuel controller is the fix for this errant stalling problem that seems to plague some 850 owners, Any Replies?
