Have just acquired a lovely 850 estate, but can't get the armrest/child seat to unfold. It opens a little then feels as though it is up against a catch - any ideas or am I missing something really simple (I hope)

If it is anything like the one that I had in my 245 it will have a catch on the right hand side. Look toward the back on the right and side of the seat and you will see it. Lift the rod ( will or should be bent like an "S" and pull streight back and up on the head rest and it will be self explanitory the rest of the way.
Its been about 4 years sense I have used mine. As the X got the car through my divorce.

Re: 850 Integrated child seat (Andym)

No handbook with it ???, you can get them pretty cheap off Ebay, you will need one to find your way around the car, thats a given and a manual is handy too if you can lay your hands on one.
You got me in so I went and checked mine, never had to use mine before as my GD is still too small to use it, the arm rest/seat actually is in two sections hinged together at the bottom, the front bit is the actual child seat and the back bit is the top of the rear arm rest when it's folded down and in use, there is a vinyl strap attached to the rear bit that has a press stud to attach it to the front bit, mine was not clipped up but the strap was down in between the two bits and I had to fish it out and clip it into place, grab that strap and pull it forward and then they both fold down together (they won't come down seperately, that was your problem) and that gives you the arm rest, then if you just want the baby seat you undo the clip and fold the top bit back into the seat, then unfold the bottom panels out for the baby seat. Sounds a bit convoluted I know but when you actually do it, it all falls into place. Thanks for the prompt, if I can sort it out anyone can.

Modified by cocka at 2:48 AM 8-17-2006

We had this in our old 850. I recall it getting stuck like this before. The more you forced it the worse it was. Seemed, pulling it from the bottom gently worked, not pushing the seat back part up, but ti's been so long that I don't remember exactly how it was.

That is the same problem with me, my 245 had a third seat and it had a bar/lever that was on the right hand side of the seat that you pushed back and then pulled up and back ( towared the rear of the car ) then pushed the seat back fwd. I guess they "improved" it.

Re: (DVolvoguy777)

I think you will find it's not the 3rd row seat it's the built in "baby safety booster" in the rear arm rest.

Yes it's the seat/armrest not a third row. Still stuck however, sticks solidly at about 15 degrees. Sunday tomorrow. will have another go. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: (Andym)

I have one in my 97 855. There is a 'pull' at the top if you don't use that pull and try to open it by using the seat 'bottom' it will bind up and not open.
