I was wondering if it's possible without making to much welding/reshaping on the frame to rebuild the 850 GLE to a early V70-R AWD? both the front and the drivetrain.
They look pretty much the same if you look away from the front so that makes me think they might be the same elsewhere to.
And btw. sinse volvo uses ALU blocks for the engines.. how much power can one get from it with what boost? I'm thinking that the alu block is a weak part if you would like to get more power out of it since it's a more "soft" metal.
Any suggestions?

Would be cheaper to sell your 850 and buy a V70R. Although aluminum, the inline-5 Volvo motor is about the strongest feature on these cars. With the right configuration and turbo they will boost well into the 300HP range. The transmissions are the weak link.

if were going to bench race, you could probably bolt in the 850AWD (there are some apparently) parts, computers and transaxle. Then just find a 98 V70R motor (would be the easiest one to convert with) and a matching ECU and be done with it.
the blocks are NOT the weak points. Rods are.

Hmm okey.. since i live in Norway its probably not the cheapest thing to sell the GLE and buy a V70R awd.
I think i might get about 65k for the gle and a v70r awd cost more than 300k i Norway. divide that with 6 and u get approx. the price in dollars.
cars ain't cheap in Norway...
doug242ti:
don't u think u can just bolt inn a v70r awd parts, computers and transaxle to?
Yeah, i'm not thinking of converting to the new v70r engine.
About the V70R engine.. is it hard to get more than 300bhp out of it? I didn't mean that the block was the weakest link as a standard engine, but when its tuned and you boost the turbo pressure. Won't that make the bolts and top lift off the block since the thread on the block would give in because the alu is to soft?

I've never heard of a head lifting on any whiteblock before the bottm end let out.
You could transfer everything over, but the first gen V70R AWD was one of the worst AWD's ever put into a volvo. Very expensive and very fragile.

Why not use a 2.3L T5 engine (you can tune it plenty!) and forget the rear wheel drive portion of the AWD. I agree from everything I've read that the AWD is bad for the P1 models, especially the early ones.

So is the 850AWD any better than the p1?? i really want a awd to get the power into the ground without allot of wheelspin. And thus, i live in a hill so its kinda nice with awd in the winter
I havent done to much research on the the engines, drivetrains etc. yett. Have had a hard time finding nice forums for volvo's and such. Any one got any else than this? I would really like to see projects with the same engines.
But back to the point. Is the R engine just a ECU upgrade of the 2.3L T5? And i have heard that above 300bhp the piston rods and transmission may fail. is this correct? By the way, i don't suspect that it is, but is it the same 5-speed manual on the 2.5L 144hp 850 as on the T5?
Thanks so far!
