Are these 80,000 orders customer orders, or are dealer inventory included?

80,000 is impressive! If I remember correctly, their original prediction was only 50,000

A great article from ANE. The old XC90, stellar success that it was, never achieved these numbers.

"Volvo CEO reconfirms expectation of big full-year profit boost

GOTHENBURG, Sweden -- Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson reconfirmed that he expects the Swedish automaker to show a “substantial improvement” in its operating profit when it reports its full-year results for 2015 in February.

He made the comment during a presentation of the Volvo S90 here on Wednesday. The new flagship sedan will make its public debut at the Detroit auto show next month.

Last year Volvo’s operating profit rose 17 percent to 2.25 billion crowns ($258 million), and in the first half of this year the automaker’s earnings increased by 71 percent to 1.66 billion Swedish crowns ($190.7 million).

Samuelsson is bullish Volvo will continue to improve financially because of stronger-than-expected demand for the XC90. The automaker has received about 80,000 orders for the recently launched second generation of its high-margin flagship SUV, well above the 50,000 orders it initially forecast.

Volvo expects the S90, its top-of-the-line sedan that will go on sale in Europe and the U.S. next year, to have a similar effect on the bottom line as the company aims to improve its operating margin to the 8 percent to 10 percent level typical for rivals such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi. By comparison, Volvo's margin was 1.5 percent in 2014 and 2.2 percent in the first half of this year.

Record sales pace

Last year Volvo had record global sales of 465,866 vehicles and in February the company indicated that it expects to set a new all-time high of nearly 500,000 sales this year.

Volvo appears on track as its global sales in November climbed 26 percent to 49,055, which was the highest monthly total in the automaker’s 88-year history.

The November surge, lead by a 91 percent gain in the U.S., pushed Volvo’s 11-month total to 441,002 vehicles, leaving it just 24,865 sales shy of a new record and about 58,998 sales away from the half-million mark. Volvo’s mid-term goal is boost global volume to 800,000 by 2020.

Steady rise
Volvo is forecast to see year-on-year production increases for the new S90 from 2016-2020
2020 65,357
2019 61,805
2018 59,400
2017 54,153
2016 29,001

Strong December US Sales for the XC90

Volvo sold 3,135 XC90's in the US in December of 2015, almost as many as sold in all of 2014 (3,952). The 2015 total was 12,777.

Looks like the pipeline (and the reputation) are ramping up:

August - 918, September - 1,182, October - 2,565, November - 2,236, December - 3,135

In Canada, 94 were sold in December, 427 in all of 2014.
