6spd goes 'Clunk' when backing up- rearend noise

Did a little searching but didn't find anything...I have an 04 SR with manual 6spd.... when backing up there is a clunk in the rear end- like there is a tooth missing in the rear end and it is spinning around to catch up and 'clunck' when it engages after i am rolling backwards.
Now- I can back up ever so lightly and it wont happen, but if it is up a hill or out into traffic- the clunk.... Interesting think is, there is no return clunk when i move forward in 1st.
I was thinking brakes or something , but it sounds as though it is coming from the middle of the car and it sure does scream drive line... It is one of those sounds that i REALLY don't want to replicated for listening purposes, but it will do it every time.
Ideas?

My bet is your e-brake shoes need to be replaced.

I sure hope so... ill try backing up with the brake on a touch and see what happens... anyone know if there is any power to the rear in reverse?
