* Drive-E powertrain program roll-out continues with high performance T6 AWD configuration
* Sensus Navigation system receives real-time traffic information
* Apple CarPlay available in XC90

Volvo Cars has announced a broad range of product updates, led by the continued roll-out of the Drive-E powertrain program.

Central to the powertrain upgrades is the award-winning high performance T6 petrol engine, now coming to the 60 cluster cars in an all-wheel drive variant delivering 306 hp and 400 Nm of torque, fulfilling Euro6 regulations and delivering best-in-class efficient performance. With this powertrain configuration the S60 is down to 161 g/km the V60 at 163 g/km and the XC60 down to 179 g/km CO2.

In the XC90 the T6 is coupled to a refined 8-speed automatic transmission, delivering 320 hp and 400 Nm. This powertrain configuration will be available globally, alongside the T5 in the XC90 which delivers 254 hp and 350 Nm.

A new T2 position will be filled by a highly efficient petrol variant on the S/V60 models that delivers 122 hp and 220 Nm of torque while also meeting Euro6 demands. The 1.5l T3 front-wheel drive automatic variant on the S/V60 will also now be available in Japan.

Twin Engine
The XC90 T8 Twin Engine delivers the cleanest and most powerful plug-in hybrid propulsion system on the market in a 7-seat SUV, and reflects the Swedish company’s commitment to add new Twin Engine variants to the model range every year.

Diesel upgrades
The model year upgrade also includes the addition of a mid-performance front-wheel drive D4 variant for the S60 and XC60 for Euro 3 diesel markets, delivering 190 hp and 400Nm of torque. It is also available in the V60, the XC90 as well as in the V40 and V40 Cross Country in select markets. This will complement the D5 with 225 hp and 470 Nm added to the diesel range earlier in the year.

Sensus
Volvo Cars’ driver control interface, Sensus receives updates across the product range in the form of an updated Sensus Navigation offer that includes real-time traffic information and free map updates. Apple CarPlay functionality will now be rolled out in the XC90.

Sensus Connect will offer new in-car apps including Yelp, an internet-based city guide that helps you to find restaurants, shopping and many more services and Glympse, a real-time location sharing application.

The popular smartphone app, Volvo On Call will also have additional functionality added, including engine remote start and preconditioning (cooling/heating) and I-Call, a concierge information service, which will be offered exclusively in China. Volvo On Call will also offers Smart watch support for both Apple Watch and Android Wear.

Design & Comfort
In the 60 Series several new exterior colours including Onyx Black and Osmium Grey are being introduced as R-Design options. Rich Java, Magic Blue and Onyx Black will be added to the XC70. There will also be an updated upholstery matrix and several new wheel options across carlines. A new massage seat with five pre-programmed functions, three levels of intensity and three speed levels will be added to take the stress out of the everyday in the XC90.

I take it we've seen the last of the six cylinder T6 R designs too?

Hmm. Real-time traffic info has been incorporated into Volvo nav systems ever since MY 2008. And free downloadable map updates have been available in MY 2015.5 Sensus Connect-equipped models. So just what exactly is new here?

Will this option be available as 2016.5 model or will it be in 2017?

I am reluctantly forced to conclude that the person at VCNA who writes these press releases does not seem to be very well informed about, uh, Volvos.

Does anyone know whey they will stop offering the five cylinder? I assume it will be close to March similar to when they stopped taking orders for inline sixes on the S80 and XC70.

Good question. One surprise from the Volvo announcement was that was only about the Drive-E T6 engine and there was no mention of the Drive-E T5 engine. But as discussed in this thread from information provided by matt1122 :-

http://forums.swedespeed.com/showthread.php?233000-S-V60-MY16-5-T6-AWD-Drive-E

that US EPA certification has been received for both the Drive-E T5 and T6 engines in the S60, V60 & XC60. So I'm assuming that the Drive-E T5 AWD isn't that far off which I would suspect mean the end of the 5-cylinder T5 in at least the 60-series Volvos in the US.

They'll probably make AWD available with the T5 Drive-E engine in '17, following the same pattern as before where it's introduced on the T6 models and added as an option to T5s later on.

Can't wait to test drive this system!

A quick question concerning the drive-e line...forgive me if it was asked many months before concerning the auto start/stop and engine wear.

What modifications (if any) did Volvo make to ensure proper lube of the engine and especially the turbo for when the start/stop is engaged? Studies show the majority of wear happens at start-up - and turbos (as I've read) should never be spun hard just after start-up. Any engineering to counter these two? I know the engine is designed to not shut down during certain situations. But cold, then someone steps on it from auto off cool engine? Ouch?

Tried to do a search to answer my own question, a barrage of links but couldn't find the info.

Don't the Drive-E have electric water pumps and electric oil pumps? If so they likely run for a period of time after the engine is shut down.
