I invested in the volvo and the normally aspirated 3.2L engine since it claimed it was only .3 seconds slower than the original T-5R. Of course since I have the v70 in USA I only had the 3.2L choice with no choice of suspension options (but that is for another topic).
I find the Volvo generates sufficient power. What I would like to know is your the opinion of the transmission. I have about 3,000 miles so I am starting to open the car up, and I think the transmission is good, not great. There appears on occasions to be some slowness to shifting or high revving. And other times it handles like a dream. A sport mode would have helped.
I do find the manual mode more interesting on country roads. And I could travel on the hwy in 4th and 5th, but generally opt for 6th. I would have preferred the BMW ZF transmission here....

Re: 6-speed transmission (Lunchman)

I testdrove a S80 with the 3.2 six and the six-speed auto tranny and got a really bad impression of the engine/tranny combo. They seemed to be very badly matched: the car alternately lurched and hesitated, even under modest acceleration. Oddly enough, somewhat later I drove a V70 with the same engine/tranny combo and was very favorably impressed. Go figure. OK, so the V70 is appreciably lighter than the S80, so it is reasonable that the engine would perform better with the lighter V70 and was IMHO barely adequate with the S80. However, the tranny also seemed a lot smoother and the shift points much better matched to the engine power curve in the V70, whereas the engine and tranny in the S80 seemed to be totally out of sync. I still haven't figured it out.

Re: 6-speed transmission (Lunchman)

I'm at about 4700 miles now with my V70, also with the standard 3.2 engine. It has 35 more HP than my last (American) wagon, which only had a 4-speed tranny, so I'm pretty happy with it; plenty for my needs.
The manual mode is also something new for me, and my wife always says: "Playing again ? ".
I've become a little too obsessive with the MPG and instaneous calc, so will try to drive as economically as possibly, trying to get up to 6th as fast as I can. Normally I can get it to shift into 6th as low as about 39mph, but never at 35. Perhaps it makes a difference in economy, but in the long run (typical tank of gas) I'm not really sure.

Quote, originally posted by Lunchman »

......I find the Volvo generates sufficient power.
