Remembering that the 2004 V70R according to R&T could outrun the 2004 base Corvette I decided to check more numbers. The S60R is still capable of outrunning the BMW 330i through the slalom too according to R&T. Something to remember when butting heads with arrogant propellor heads that swing mightily on other auto boards.

Re: 4C is...Great ! ? S60R is the slalom King. (swedishiron)

Numbers are great and all but 2 years of ownership says 4C is...Sucky.

I am new to this forum and the R itself, so my experience is not at par with most of you, but I have seen a lot of people knock 4C down a lot and I am not sure why yet. So far, my experience with the system is good and I would like to point out that comparisons to the M3 or other cars in that price range are a bit unfair to the R since, at least in Greece, it costs a fraction of the price. Expectations also play a big role I guess; the R is not a racing machine, rather it's a family sedan with more oomph than most with the added benefit of Volvo's quality and safety. Cruising with 200+ kph and still being able to accelerate when needed, or having the cornering ability of the R in a family sedan, is good in my book. Then again, I have only had mine for less than a month... hopefully it will not misbehave and change my mind!

Re: 4C is...Great ! ? S60R is the slalom King. (swedishiron)

I have years of autocrossing under my belt, albeit decades ago. <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/frown.gif" BORDER="0"> I was blown away by the R's prowess through the cones when I drove it on an autocross course during a demo. Man, it could change direction like a halfback.<p>One of the many things I learned during those years of autoX is that the "home" club always sets up the course to give a home-field advantage to their marque. To wit, this course had a lot of slaloms and straight-line braking to show off 4C and the Brembos, and no tight 180's to expose the large turning radius or terminal understeer. And of course, it was smooth.<p>It takes a while to detect the rear-end squirreliness that comes as standard equipment on the R's, but once you get you butt-o-meter calibrated to it, it becomes annoying. Speaking for myself, it's not enough to spoil the overall enjoyment of the car. It's definitely a negative, though.

The 2006 version of 4C is no longer sucky, IMHO. You still get a little jitter and hop, on occasion, but it is a lot better. It is not quite the equal of the BMW 3-series suspension, but it might be after springs and sway bars are changed out.

Ironically, the S60R is fastest at autocross with 4C DISABLED.... I've done at least several dozen (if not more than 100) runs on identical courses with it enabled and disabled (and in Comfort, Sport, and Advanced) and it is fastest when it is off.

The one aspect of "4C" that I think contributes most to the fun of driving the R is the change in responsiveness to the throttle in "Advanced".<br>It sure makes the R feel like a road eater! <p>I take the liberty of quoting myself from another thread:<p><I>IMHO, the effect on the driving sensation (your butt dyno) of the increase throttle response is just stunning. When I first got the car I was chasing a new 350Z uphill on one of my favorite twisties and I reached over and hit "Advanced". As the next apex approached and I put my foot in it to accelerate out of the turn, I almost ran up on his rear deck, the car leapt forward so quick. I was amazed--and so was he! (I didn't nerf him, but almost!!). He simply could NOT accelerate with me uphill coming out of tight turns. <p>I owned an early Maserati 2.5l Biturbo, which, engine wise, is an interesting comparison with the R (chassis wise, the Italian "nervosita" nature of the steering and handling made it a very different ride). It had very little turbo lag and I think the R equals or beats it. But as far as pegging the needle on your butt dyno +/or your fun meter, the throttle response change in "Advanced" sure makes up for a lot of "turbo lag."</I><p>I admit the effect on chassis settings in "Advanced" is a mixed bag at best.<p>

The only way to get rid of that bog on the stock turbo is to dump high enough to break 'em loose... and I mean LOOSE! That's how I ran my best quarter mile times, and I'm sure my clutch hated me that day! Short of that, bog central... Maybe instead of putting 2 of the crappy T5 intercoolers in the R, they should have but 2 of the crappy T5 turbos in the car and one bigger FMIC. Twin, or bi-turbo with equal total boost of the one big turbo, but MUCH less bog, if ANY! ehhhh... Just my pair o' pennies!
