Just wondering whether there is a way out of the 3rd row seats thru the liftgate from the inside of the vehicle in case of a crash. Any ideas? I think Volvo should have thought of that being so safety conscious. Just wondering.
Andrew

Re: 3rd row safety question (AndyR)

I am not sure what you mean. It depends on what situation you may have in an accident. Third row seats are not a bench, but two separate seats. There is space connected to the cargo area between the seats. So when it is rolled over in an accident, the third row passengers can exit through the tail gate IF the gate can be open. I am not sure if this is what you are asking....... I don't want to imagine a worse situation.

Re: 3rd row safety question (patriot)

what I mean is that you are in an accident and the 2nd row seat occupants are all unconcious and you cannot obviously fold down the 2nd row seats in order to exit the 3rd row. Can you get out of the vehicle thru the back?

Why can't you climb over the dead/unconscious people or use the inside handle of the liftgate to get out?
Yannis

Andy,
Yes, you can exit to tailgate through the space between two third seats. Most likely, the third raw passengers will be small size people.

Re: 3rd row safety question (patriot)

Thanks, that's exactly what I was wondering about. I am ready to place an order, however my wife who works with auto accidents was not exactly sold on the safety of the 3rd row. I guess she has seen too many cases of people being trapped in back seats of coupes and so on. Hope this eases her mind. I saw the xc 90 in person at one of the unveilings, but that thought did not cross my mind at the time.
Thanks a bunch.
Andrew

You're welcome, Andrew. Sorry about calling you Andy....
If you don't need 7 seaters, why don't you just order 5 seaters? It is cheaper, lighter, and more economical with T5 engine. If you consider 7 seaters, then I recommend T6 engine. Hope you'll make a right choice for your new XC90.
Re: 3rd row safety question (patriot)

I need the 7 seater and was seriously considering ML and MDX, but decided to wait and see how the XC is going to handle on the road. I'll definetly be ordering the T6, however the 4 speed trans has me a bit worried.
Andrew

Re: 3rd row safety question (AndyR)

I drove S80 Elite (T6 w/ 4 speed trans) on Autobahn in Germany about 180 kms (about 113 miles). I didn't see any problem; the trip computer showed 18-19 mpg for an hour drive. It had more passing power reserved, of course. I am sure the XC90 will be different. My point is that 4 speed trans would be no problem except the number on mpg. It would be great if 5 or 6 speed trans were available.
My sales manager said that the earliest would be 2004 model IF, IF the Volvo decides. It is the matter of when, not if. I think. He smiled at me. Will see! BTW, I ordered mine (T6 w/7 seats and other options).

Actually, according to some Volvo folks I talked to, the 2004 MY is not that far away. Production starts in march. I wonder if anyone has any concrete info on 5 speed in the T6. Wonder if it is worth waiting. Top Gear supposedly got a frightening 10.8 mpg in their test drive of T6.

Re: 3rd row safety question (AndyR)

Why are you worried about the 4-speed transmission on the T-6? It functions just fine! I drove the T-6 model today and it performs real well.
Do not even think about the ML...I drove that truck 3 years ago and I also drove today the latest ML320 (only 770 miles on it). What a piece of crap! I can't believe people buy this thing. If it did not have the three stars on the hood no one would want it. It rides like a...ahem, truck, is seriously underpowered, handles the curves like a truck...accessing the 3rd row is a joke, seats are very hard...What a horrible truck for that kind of money!
On the other hans, the MDX was much nicer although I have depicted the XC90's advantages in a separate post.
Yannis

Re: 3rd row safety question (AndyR)

Andrew,
I don't think that T6 engine's mpg is that bad. PURE GUESS is between 16-17 in city and 18-20 in Highway. It weighs 2046 kg (= about 4550 lbs - almost the same as BMW X5 3.0i) with T6 engine and 7seats according to Canadian spec.
You can change the trans to 5 speed one IF THAT IS AVAILABLE when Volvo asks you to confirm your order - according to my sales manager.
BTW, he said that most likely, S60R/70R will be in production from week 10 in MY 2003, which means sometime in March 2003. Sorry I put the wrong year
[Modified by patriot, 9:29 AM 9-24-2002]

[Modified by patriot, 9:36 AM 9-24-2002]

You can change the trans to 5 speed one IF THAT IS AVAILABLE when Volvo asks you to confirm your order - according to my sales manager.
Does that mean that they confirm that a 5 speed will be available next model year on T6?
[QOUTE]
Does that mean that they confirm that a 5 speed will be available next model year on T6?

Andrew,
There is no confirmation on 5 speed trans availability by Volvo as far as I know. What I said is that when the Volvo/your dealer asks you to confirm your order before they put it into production line and AT THE SAME TIME if the 5 speed trans is available for production of T6 model, THEN you can request change in your order from 4 to 5 speed trans. Once you confirm your order at this time, then you cannot make any change for your order. Before then, you can make any changes except engine size and seat version, which are already confirmed in earlier time. But this is how order system works here in Europe for US Spec. Not sure about the States side.
Hope it will help you clean on this

Thanks a bunch everybody, the little discussion helped clear some things up. Good luck with the vehicle, Patriot. I will probably be picking up in Europe myself since I go there quite often.
Thanks again,
Andrew
