Thrilled to have purchased my first Volvo (S60 AWD). I drove the Saab 9-3, A4, and Volvo and there was no contest. In any event, has anyone had a headlight on this vehicle broken by a stone? The dealer (among many accessories) suggests the 3M headlight covers (like the clear 3M nosemask but much thicker) to protect the glass from rocks. I've had headlights break in the past from rocks thrown from passing vehcicles but the lenses were plastic, not glass. Any advice would be helpful -- and I may have more questions. I've certainly learned a lot from this forum as I was trying to decide! Thanks!

Yannis, your ESP ability is exceeded only by your knowledge of Volvos.... Yes, silver. I do drive a lot (69 miles of two-lane each way to work) and they don't use salt in the winter, just a stone aggregate. The front and left front fender of my dark-blue 2001 Outback looks like I was driving behind a fully loaded gravel truck for 10,000 miles (hence the reason for silver!). And I don't drive close to the car in front -- it's from cars coming the other way!

Kronacar...
I read a thread on Volvo Spy and a member there reported that he had a headlight lens cracked by a thrown rock. H stated that a replacement lens costs over $450. That alone was enough to make me go out and purchase the 3M light lens cover. I also bought the fog light lens covers...and I had them professionally installed by the company who tinted my windows. They only charged me $20 for the installation and I truly think the protection is worth it.
I’m also thinking about applying a 3M-hood protector…hopefully that will protect my S-60 even further!
Wil

Wil, thanks. $450 for a headlight was the quote the dealer gave me as well. I have the 3M nose mask on my Outback and had it on a Maxima. It works pretty well but I still have a few chunks taken out of it which went down to the paint despite the protection. I'm going out today and having it installed on my S60 -- it is virtually invisible, especially on lighter colored cars.

Try searching for them on Ebay. I know that they have 70 series headlight covers starting at $9.99. Here's one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1821100982&r=0&t=0
I actually did a search for S60s but couldn't find any. Try e-mailing that seller, maybe he has some. I'll be putting on my covers as soon as my car get back from the shop.

Here is a picture of 'Arts' 01' V70 XC, with the protective film. If it were me, I would put on the foglights for sure, cheap insurance IMHO.

-Drew

I had a foglight break from a rock. I got the dealer here to replace it(they paid). They recommended the 3m coating which I got. It cost me $30 which I paid. I dont know of anyone who has had one break since they had the coating put on. I also have the nose mask.

Are there specific 3M film shapes for the S60 headlights and foglights? If not, how are you supposed to put them on? You cut the shapes out yourself?
How much would the film cost for 2 headlights and 2 foglights?

The window tinting shop quoted me $45 for headlights alone (I don't have fog lights). I haven't found any pre-made covers for the S60 yet - I'm assuming the tinting shop is cutting their own.

Hey Mike_c70, that xpel.com has great prices! The 4-piece headlight+foglight kit is only $53 and you said they're pre-cut too. Good deal.

I'm assuming that the Volvo headlights and fog lights aren't made of Lexan since it usually takes a hell of a lot to break a Lexan molded piece.
Is there a reason why they aren't Lexan?
Pat
