I finally got someone to install my clear bra on my bumper and all I can say is HOLY CRAP!! I bought the material but never got up the stones to install it. I did tackle the hood with great success, but the bumper is a totally different animal and I'm glad I punted. This is the same place that has done quite a bit of tint work for me and they quoted me $220. Well, that turned out to be a freaking steal! The job took him all day to complete it and he almost quit in the middle, said he just really struggled with it. He said that on a scale of 1-5, my bumper was a 4.5, it was just a bitch.

Anyway, when I went to pick it up I looked at it and actually didn't think they did it, I couldn't find anyplace where it started/stopped, it's unreal. I think I got it installed just in time too, I was starting to see some chips and road rash here or there, I just wish I would have gotten it done at 19K when I bought it. Oh well, it's on there now and it's awesome.

If you have a front end that's in good shape still and have thought about this, get it done, but don't try it yourself, put the responsibility on someone else, someone that knows what they are doing. If you're within driving distance of KC, let me know I'll give you this guy's number, he flat out nailed this thing.

Re: 3M Clear Bra (Husker Z)

Wow. Why is it so hard to put on? What's involved?

glad it worked for you, but I'm not really a big fan of clear bras.

They eventually do get little rock chips on then, through which water sips and corodes the paint...and they become rough when you run your hand over it.
Also, the hood line is always visible, and you can't wax the area under the bra.

I'd rather just re-spray my hood and bumper after 100K miles....stone chips are part of owning a car

I think because of not on the curves on the front, but all the cutouts that they have to curve around, the grill, the opening under the grill, the headlight wipers, the fog light grilles, etc.

I wasn't sure what I would think of it either, but I've had the hood on for a few months now and I have really liked having it on there, I wax it just like I do the paint and it seems to be staying smooth and the line on it is really only visible if you look really close, or it's super dusty. I understand that rock chips happen, but on Sonic Blue, they stick out like crazy and if I can avoid some of them, it'll help me sleep better at night.

You have to really search for the lines on the bumper, I can't believe the job this guy did, it's unreal.

I would take a picture of it, but that would be kind of pointless seeing as it's clear. I sat and stared at it last night though and kept trying to find where it started/stopped without running my hands on it. Just a fantastic job done by this guy, he needs a raise.

It's both the curves and the cut outs. Concave one place and only a few inches away it is convex. Makes it really hard to stretch both ways and get it to stick right. And there are something like 50 million cut outs that make it even harder to line up. I posted before about my travails. The installer who did mine said never again (and it wasn't all that great of a job - but they did knock of a huge chunk of the installation charge). Glad that it worked out for you.

I knew you had some difficulty and we actually talked when I bought this thing. After our discussion is when I decided it probably wasn't a job for me. I talked to quite a few people prior to picking this guy. Along with being the cheapest, I felt the most comfortable with him.

I think the key is having a steaming machine to be able to heat the material up to be able to stretch it and curve it to where you want it.

what really happened is he did quit, pulled it off, and thus you can't find the seams...

That's exactly what I thought when I pulled up and when I started to look at it. I thought "Oh sh!t, this isn't good, he ruined it". Then I found a seam, where it stops as it wraps around the side of the bumper. Then, I was just floored. Great dudes.

Sounds dirty pulling Bras off and all. Wrapping around curves and such. bow chicka bow wow

Yeah, I always said I was pretty darn good at taking bras off, but have never mastered putting one on, I guess it applies to women and cars.

Yep, I remember the exchange clearly (no pun intended). The folks I had do mine did not have a steaming machine but I did see a hairdryer lying around. Not sure if it was for the installer or the installation.
