Pretty sure it's limited to 3g, at least on my 2018

Current gen (at least 2019+) the modem is capable of both 3g and 4g lTE

 

2015.5-2018 S60 / V60 = 3G onboard Modem.
2019+ (Redesign) = 4G Modem.

I honestly just tether my cell phone's wifi to the vehicle to enable sensus features. Subscribing to AT&T's monthly 3G @ 20/month is more expensive than the cost of the Unlimited Mobile Hotspot on my cell phone plan.

 

I was having a problem with the tethering, the weather app wasn't connecting, so I just went into the menu and turned on the modem. Weather app started getting it's data. I've never activated anything it just worked. Is it because the weather app works without a subscription, or will it stop working someday??

 

I can't speak for the 2019+ Volvos but Traffic + Weather on 2015.5-2018 S60s are handled by Sirius and are subscription based.

 

2019+ has a Sensus weather app, it uses the data connection.
