I have a feeling that previous owner had a regular (non-synthetic) oil in my R. I thought about this for a first time when I just picked up the car and was screening all papers I got with it. I noticed that Volvo of Greenville, NC charged only $3.25 per quart. I was puzzled and emailed back to the owner. She called to the dealer and replied saying that dealer claims they used Mobil1 10W30.. well I was little bit relieved until I found a half-empty container of Castrol GTX in rear fender...
Anyway, I just changed the oil and look how much deposits oil cap had. I tried to wipe it first, then I realized it's hard and thought I have to share it... Poor car. Anyway, it had been SeaFoamed and filled with the oil...

Use some sort of Oil Flush/Cleaner such as seafoam, and then run clean oil in if for couple hundred miles, then Check and possibly change it
My oil Cap looked like that at 101k, I used engine degresser and it looks like new now, But a new OE Cap is a couple of bucks

BTW, A lot of people say Dino oil is ok to run in Turbo cars now, IDK but I only use Full Synthetic.

Re: 30000 miles on regular oil... (Papa_Kirlo)

Castrol didn't had a real full synthetic oil, until short I think, but I don't care about castrol .... I use since swap 1 (20K km) (and I broke her in like i stole her only after she was warm) Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 (each 10k since then)... no sludge nor burned crap on the cap. Burned only the amount of oil during the 1st 20K so the message to fill up just appeared during the trip home on the Peage. Her piston-springs are seated perfect and so the figure on the cylinder-walls.
I never complained about the 0-60mphs figure etc.

Re: 30000 miles on regular oil... (VolvokidS60R)

I bought my R out of a lease and the guy took care of it as such. I have been changing my oil every 3k miles (synthetic) and adding CD2 engine cleaner (less harsh of a treatment than seafoam). Also added a few bottles of fuel system cleaner.
12k later open the cap and it is nice and clean- no more varnish. Highly recommend this way of doing it as it is less harsh on the internals (seemingly so anyway).

Re: 30000 miles on regular oil... (swede2nr)

Sludgy. And I too thought it was 30K with no oil change at first. whew! A college friend's sister leased a Pathfinder for 3 years and didn't have the vehicled serviced once...for anything. Never even checked the oil, let alone changed it. Needless to say they ripped her a new one when she turned it in.
CJones..he says it was already Seafoamed and filled with real oil. Should be fine now.
