3 blink lane change signals

On the 2011 XC90 that replaced the totaled 2004 a quick touch of the turn signal will give 3 blinks. This has been available on cars in Europe for a while, the ones I have rented.

Anyone heard of a retrofit for the 3 blink signal?

I got really used to using it on the new XC90 and then into the 2004 S60R and wish I had it.

I had a rental benz that did this. I had no idea how cool/functional this was until I used it. If there is any way to get this on the R i will do it almost immediately

My 07 has this already

I would be all over that! I wonder if it was a '07 model year change item (like the turn signal repeaters in the outside rear-view mirrors); my '06 doesn't have it. Or as OP suggested, can it be retrofitted? I also wonder if other '07 owners have the feature.

My Passat has the 3-blink feature and I really like the convenience. As I switch between cars, I sometimes catch myself hitting the turn signal stalk on my R only to have it flash the turn signal once. Then I reach and hold it down to change lanes.

Edit: oops. rgrove and I must have been typing at the same time and you posted quicker. ;)

I had this on my GTI and it's kind of cool but I usually just ended up turning on the turn signal and cancelling it myself just because I found that the three blinks isn't quite long enough in most situations. But I live in Houston where drivers are absolutely terrible so I make sure I give people plenty of warning before switching lanes.

+1

I generally prefer manual mode.
If I'm not mistaken, once you trigger it, you can't stop it before cycles through 3 flashes.

Not a bad idea...

'10+ F150 and other fords do this. Blinker switch no longer clicks in, it's all software. Bump it for lane change, full push for turn. It goes back to zero even on full push, but the software keeps it on. A small bump in the other direction cancels the command. It was weird at first but I like it.

My buddies bimmer does this as well. It would be a nice feature on the R. Someone try to switch out the turn signal stalk!

My G/F's 2006 S40 does this, but my 2006 R does not. hmm...I agree that it's software and nothing to do with the stalk.

So what does the 2007 S60R have that the 2004 does not?
Software not hardware.

Technically this isn't a legal signal for a lane change... In the US I've been pulled over for not signalling a full 4 seconds before departing the lane... then it has to stay on until you're completely in the new lane.

Yea the cop that stops you for something like this is probably wearing his underwear too tight, but it happens.

my fathers 05 corvette and my gf's 07 audi a4 do this and i think it is the ****. perfect for lane changes and such. very interested if this could be retrofitted into my R.

huh, i must be one of the few who is glad I don't have it. i signal but it isn't always 3 blinks depending on where/when i'm driving.

now if we could somehow retrofit other drivers cars to automatically blink when it senses them crossing a lane we'd be on to something...

people rarely signal around here.

The Germans call it the autobahn signal. It's just for lane changes. My audi had this and it was an 05. My parents 08 XC did too. I love it. Dont have to hold it down, less intrusive.

I'd love to retro fit this to my vehicles, it'd be nice.

In many states the length of a turn signal isn't set, it's a determination thing. Another way for cops to pull you over for no real reason.

So do we ask IPD?

i only blink left-right-left when I pass supercars, sometimes the drivers don't care whate i do lol or even noticed

There is a guy on the volvo.nl forums site that has been succesfull doing this via the canbus. His goal was to make some "black boxes" but he is running into legal issues and people are giving him a hard time about "what happens if your canbus commands screw up the car and cause the driver injury"

here's a video of it working along with another feature, gauge sweep on startup

From my experience (limited) with the canbus, things like this are doable but take ALOT of trial and error which in turn could cause detrimental effects to your car. For example, I was trying to make the interior lights come on and I somehow managed to get an SRS service urgent warning...not cool...luckily I had a PPC unit to clear the code

You'd think the dealership would be able to do this for us too.
