Please take pity on me....my google isn't as good on this car as others.

I'm looking for a good DIY to replace the a/c compressor on my XC90. It's right on top, so it *looks* easy, but I'm sure there's a trick. I think there is also a solenoid or something that needs replacing....is that part of the compressor or a separate part?

Photos or video, either is fine....I have other cars that it's a little easier to find DIYs than this one.

thanks

The A/C compressor on the 3.2 are variable speed compressors and they do have a solenoid that is know for having issues on occasion. As far as I'm aware, the solenoid is located on the front of the compressor. Open the hood, stare at the compressor and look down on it a little bit. You will see 2 wires leading to the solenoid, which itself is held on by a snap ring. It would be part number 6 in the diagram. If you are replacing the whole compressor, it should already come with this so there is no need to worry about it. Otherwise, you can probably replace it with the compressor in place, the system will still have to be evacuated before replacing it though. If you're replacing the whole compressor, there really aren't any gotchas that I can remember from taking the belt off of the XC90 3.2 in my family. Anyways, here are some instructions that will be helpful. The only thing it doesn't show is removing the lines. You do not need to remove the clutch to remove the whole compressor, these are just the closest instructions I found.

The part that comes up for a 2010 XC90. Please double check if you replace this component, I am not positive that this is the correct one for your car.
