We are building a P1800 race car for the NASA 25 hour enduro in December at Thunderhill.
The work will be done at John Pagel's shop in Davis. We'll need some help building and preparing the car, probably working mostly on Saturdays and Sundays. If you would like to help out and be part of the crew for this very cool event, (Grassroots Motorsports did a huge article on the race last year) please get in touch with John. His email address is [email protected]
It will be a good chance to learn about building race cars and also great fun to take a p1800 to the race in December.
We have the drive train out, the glass and doors off and we built a cart that will carry the unibody and roll it around at a nice work height. Mike Denman is dismantling the front suspension and taking it home to bead blast. We got the wiring harness out in one piece, cut some rusty stuff out, ect. photos soon at http://www.goldengatevcoa.org The car is already entered in the 25 hour, so I guess we are serious.
You don't have to be a great mechanic to do this kind of stuff. It is mostly demolition at this stage. There is plenty of hard, dirty, unpleasant work to remove all the parts, grease, paint, and crap. We'll do some basic body work , get a good 30 foot paint job - blue and silver, split down the middle like the S60Rs. The car will have a B23 with a twin cam head, and a mustang 5 speed. We have all the mechancial stuff. This is an interesting project... It ain't vintage racing. We are going up against the modern stuff with a 40 year old car. It won't be real fast, but it might last 25 hours. The motor sure will.
After the 25 hour we'll put it back together and make it a track day car. It will be available to play with at future track days. If you want to drive a fully prepped race car, come help. Your sweat will earn you some seat time at track days, and I promise you'll learn some stuff from John.
Again... John's shop is in Davis. If you want to get involved with this email him at
[email protected]
tell him you want to get dirty! We'll be at it most weekends. Bring some beer.
