Okay, I've still been thinking about how to play wiht our 240 project car. This idea came to mind after I found some (rather pricey) black fender flares for the car and I sat next to an XC in traffic.
A set of front 260 springs and rear IPD overload springs could probably put the ride height up where it'd look the part (wonder how it would ride?).
Some spacers would make use of the XC wheels possible.
Only trouble is it wouldn't be AWD, but as slow as it currently is, I'm not sure we want extra drag on the system anyway.

Wouldn't the 'higher' ride height have an adverse effect on the handling characteristics as well? Or would the 260's stiffer springs compensate for this?

-Drew

That's what I was wondering. The stiffer spring rate might just cancel it out, but I don't think anyone has done it yet, so I doubt anyone knows for sure.

I think you would get a lot more body roll with the CG up high. I would never jack-up a car unless it was a Land Cruiser or something that needs more clearence when you go offroading.

Yeah, that's the question. We're going to be tightening it up with some of IPD's structural options, and for the moment, we're going to go with Bilstein Touring shocks and TME sport springs (lowering the car), but I can't help think that the beefed up structure, and the more rigid spring rates of the 260 and overload springs wouldn't at least offer an improved ride over the current aged stock setup, though not as good as the MTM sport springs.
We MIGHT look into this down the road, but not initially. It's still a humorous idea though.

Then I keep looking at Drew's and thinking, if I could find a set of those 5-spokers in 16", that'd look pretty great. 17's are nice, but they're a little rough for everyday driving on that car, and they just look too darned big on these cars IMHO.

The car already sits high, and the car is tall. Don't raise it more. It will ride harder on the stiffer springs, so there's probably not much to be gained except for ground clearance and cargo/towing capacity.
Are the Bilstein touring shocks acceptable for a lowered car?

You might experience a little bit stiffer ride, but I wouldn't think it would be much. Handling would be compromised slightly by the higher Cg, but with the extra chassis bracing and thick sway bars you'd probably end up better than stock. You might want Diesel springs, though - I'm not sure what the V6 springs specs are, but curiously, my factory literature shows the alloy V6 engine weighing less than the iron-block 4. And much less than the VW diesel.
Then if you could find some front & rear bars and brush guards...

George, when I raised my 262 up with the coilovers in the front and diesel springs in the rear, it handled really nicely. A million times better than stock, with not too much body roll. Obviously not as good as with it lowered, but it wasn't bad at all. I can get you diesel springs (at least rear) for cheap if you'd like...
Rob

I think for the moment we are going to lower it. We just received some stuff for the Project Car, including the new Bilstein Touring setup & TME lowering springs.
I haven't heard anything negative about the Bilsteins. Michael, what do you mean?
BTW Rob, at some point I need to talk to you about installation of the suspension and other things. Don't know if you are into taking on some weekend work...

Oh, well they are brand new for IPD, so we'll see what the result is. I know the HDs aren't bouncy at all when lowered reasonably, but this is my first time with the Touring versions.

The Bilstein Heavy Duty shocks are fine for a lowered car, but I don't know if the new Bilstein Touring shocks will perform well with lowering springs. I think they're advertised as an OEM replacement, so that's why I brought it up.
Let me know when you guys will be transforming the project car, I'd like to check it out. George, I'll have an extra set of IPD sway bars (25mm front/22mm rear) as soon as I swap my rear bar, so if you're interested maybe we could do that at the same time as your other suspension work. I'm looking to get about $160 for the sway bars (bushings/brackets included).

I just sent you guys a list of what I need to do, and the dates that work for me (all March weekends). Shoot me an email back when you get the chance.

One thing that I forgot to mention is that you should replace the upper strut mounts while the front suspension is apart. Use Volvo or Boge parts only.
