Can anybody help me with some advice on what size speakers will fit into the factory holes in the front door of a 1989 245(no power windows). I was hoping 5.25" would fit, but do they need to be smaller?
sorry, i just learned there is a car audio section. -thx.
[This message has been edited by ThisGuy (edited 02-26-2002).]

Most 240s used a 4" front speaker. Kenwood and Pioneer make some speakers that will fit without sticking too far out and without hitting the window. You can use 5.25", but the window cranks may pose a problem, and you need to add a spacer of about 1/2" to make sure the magnet clears the window.
If you use 4" and you want to keep the stock speaker grilles, take the original speakers and cut the center out so you're left with a metal frame that fits over the new speaker. Attach the frame over the aftermarket speaker and you'll be able to snap on the grilles. This is what the old speaker should look like:

Thank you very much for the quick reply. I am looking forward to getting rid of the blown originals that I just inherited.

quote:
Originally posted by towerymt:
Most 240s used a 4" front speaker. I'd recommend sticking with 4" speakers - you're not going to that much improvement by going with the 5.25", and it doesn't make for a very good fit IMHO. I had 5.25", specially made to fit in a shallow opening, in my 164, which is a little easier to do than in the 240, and it would just graze the window winder (and bust your knuckle every other day! ) I have 4" in my 240 with the stock grilles so as not to attract unwanted attention. The door speakers just add imaging and highlights, the real power will be coming from the rear - 6X9"s, or a sub or whatever you might have.
Those stock Volvo speakers truly suck - they sound so bad, it's hard to tell when they're blown!

I only have placement for two speakers which are located in the door on my 264. What can I do for rear speakers?
Also, how much will it cost to get a head unit for the 240 series?
Thanks,
Paul

Re: (ThisGuy)

Hi, New here...
Has anyone tried to put 6.5 speakers in the lower door panels. Seems to be the only way to get a decent sized speaker in there.

Re: (88Matteo245)

With power windows, a 5.25" speaker will fit in the front door in the normal spot, as long as there's a bit of a spacer to keep the speaker from hitting the window. 6"x9" speakers will fit in the rear deck with a little metal cutting. Otherwise, 5.25" will fit w/o cutting any metal.
All of the 200 series cars I've seen with bigger than 5.25" front door speakers were custom installs.
