I just bought a 1989 240 DL wagon and was wondering what the difference is between a 240 and a 245? Please understand I am new here. Thanks.

240 is the series. The number after the 4 designates how many doors the car has. 242 is the coupe, 244 is the sedan and 245 is the wagon.
So you have a 245.

To be even more specific:
2 - 2(00) series
4 - 4-cyl engine
5 - 5 doors (wagon)
Don't forget that there was the 260, not just the 240.
So, saying "200" refers to all 200-series Volvos (haven't heard anyone use this), "240" refers to all 200-series 4-cyl Volvos, "245" refers to 240 5-door Volvos, etc.
I presume that Volvo kept this XYZ => X-series Y-cyl Z-door up until the new nomenclature with the 70-series.

There was also a 4cyl 260, the '80-'81 264, which used the B21 or B28. Generally, the Volvo naming is correct.

quote:
I presume that Volvo kept this XYZ => X-series Y-cyl Z-door up until the new nomenclature with the 70-series.

I've heard that the Volvo name for the S70 was "870", but I don't know if that's true or not.
