Just like when you go to the doctor, they ask you describe your pain on a 1-10 scale. I would saw a 10 in this case would be the iPhone displaying the “iPhone is too hot” message.

Yeah, but what's 10? Like, phone actually smoking/on fire? Too hot to touch?

Lol, I'm reminded of this: xkcd: Pain Rating

Hej Swedes! I've been in my new 2022 XC60 for just a few days time. I noticed my phone gets usually warm (6-7/10 hot scale) when sitting on the charger. I tried removing phone case, which helped a bit, but it still gets usually warm. I don't have any issues at home using a wireless charger. Phone placement is proper, in the middle with both top & bottom reinforcements in place. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Tack
This happened to me today. I’ve had the car a week and my iPhone 12 got the dreaded “too hot” message while on the charger. While I love the wireless charging feature, I’m now thinking it’s going to be trouble! It’s a very convenient place to keep my phone while driving. The dashboard mount I used in my previous car was a pain. Not thrilled that my phone overheated…hoping there is a way to “solve” this issue!

I haven't had a long enough drive to see whether or not my iphone gets hot on the wireless charger. If it does, the technology is subpar and disappointing especially for a Volvo. My old 2020 Kia Soul GT Line Turbo had a wireless charger and my phone never got hot.

Has anyone already tried charging OnePlus phones? I'm asking because OnePlus phones are only compatible w/ 15w QI chargers [or their own superfast inductive chargers) and I couldn't find information on whether Volvo uses a 7,5w (= Standard QI) or 15w (= Extended Power Profile). I guess, the first is the case (although I'd love to use the wireless charger). Thanks!

It will likely be just fine, as long as the phone's wireless charging is Qi certified. I got curious and looked up the specs from the Qi wireless power consortium (link here), and section 4.1 of the introduction document (version 1.3, Jan 2021) suggest backward compatibility with "chargers" of lower power:
For example, if the Power Receiver is designed to be charged by a 15 W Power Transmitter but is placed on a 5 W Power Transmitter, the Power Receiver may allow charging at a slower rate.
Conversely, if a 5 W Power Receiver is placed on a 15 W Power Transmitter, the Power Receiver will instruct the Power Transmitter to send no more than 5 W of power.

Thanks for looking it up. I don't think it is Qi certified, at least there is no information about it. I already tried "slow" (5W) chargers unsuccessfully - the phone detects them, but won't charge. EPP chargers (15W) work fine. The same thing report other users.

The heating issue is not unique to the XC60. The one on the XC40 gets the phone quite hot too. It seems to be the charging pad’s issue as people with iPhones, Samsungs, etc experience the same issue.

Yep, any phone wireless charging, plus a case, plus doing GPS mapping (Android Auto or Apple Car Play) means the phone is doing a lot at the same time, and will get warm.
If you have Android, some phone now have a "protect battery" setting that will limit charging to 85% automatically which should help out battery life, and heat generated when phone is pretty full. Not sure if Apple has that setting or not though.

For EU it's still a standard feature in every trim.
I wish I had more information on why Volvo USA can't get any of their computer related items to work correctly. I swear someone missed a very important semicolon somewhere.

My Samsung S22 Ultra has not been getting hot. The Qi charger in the XC60 is super slow though. I kind of expected that to happen, to be honest.

Not sure where the discussion landed, but it gets too damn hot! Was the case with our 2021 and our couple day old 2022. Like scary hot in a way that you pick it up and your first thought is, “That’s not good.” Wife and I both have ‘11 Pro with cases. I disagree that the charger works harder when there’s a case on the phone. My guess is it emits the same charge when connected. Also, direct sunlight may be its own separate thing, but the result is the same in rainy, overcast skies in the PNW. If it were a separate option and I was ordering the car I would pass on it.

So I have a 2017 SE iPhone that can't charge wirelessly. Does the electromagnetic radiation of this charging pad have any effect on a phone like mine? And my wife has an iPhone X that can be charged wirelessly; can the feature be turned off so that her phone won't get warmed if placed in the wireless-charging spot?

No. Just nothing will happen.

And my wife has an iPhone X that can be charged wirelessly; can the feature be turned off so that her phone won't get warmed if placed in the wireless-charging spot?
I saw in a YouTube review of a MY22 XC60 that there's an option to disable it in the settings. Unfortunately, I don't remember the video.

When I took possession of my 2022, the option was set tooff. The salesman explain to me that it was to avoid risk with people using a pacemaker.
I let it in off position because I don't like wireless charging but you can change it when needed.

... I disagree that the charger works harder when there’s a case on the phone...
The issue with heat and a case while charging is that the case insulates the phone and keeps the heat in a good bit more than a bare phone would.

2 iPhone 12’s here. 2021 XC60 T8 Recharge RDesign. Both phones get hot (too hot) on the wireless charger pad - with or without cases…and running no Apps. Also takes forever to charge.

I’be disabled the Wireless Charger function in Settings. I charge via Lightning Cable (2 USB Ports in the Center Console), one connected to Apple CarPlay (can also be set to NOT automatically start Apple CarPlay when connected)…the other USB Lightning Cable is used just for charging an iPhone in it’s dash mounted ProClip mount and holder.
