2022 T8 10k Mile Service & Tire Wear Issue

I took my wife’s 2022 T8 extended range to the dealership for the 10k mile service this morning. It had a recall for the ECM update and the electric heater hasn’t been working in pure mode. They’re ordering a replacement heater and said that it should be in within a few days. The service advisor called me and said that there’s some abnormal tire wear and they recommend a rotation and balance. The manual states that the tires don’t require a rotation, but I rotated them myself from front to back at 5k miles when I did an oil change. After reading some posts online it seems like the stock tires don’t wear very well. Am I correct in rotating the tires front to back and keeping them on the same side on the XC90? I’ve read that some people have had issues with alignments from the factory too.

Does your dealer have one of those new machines that analyzes the alignment when you pull Into the service bay?

It’s interesting to hear that Volvo doesn’t recommend tire rotation for the T8 since it’s primarily a RWD or FWD driven car depending on mode

Abnormal tire wear is caused by the alignment being out of whack. And supposedly for the T8 with the giant wheels, the pirellis get hammered if not caught quickly. Tell them you want to see the alignment specs from the machine

You say you rotated your tires at 5K, how did they look then?
Did you ask the SA what they ment by "some" abnormal tire wear?
How do they look to you now?

"Abnormal" wear can be caused by more than one thing.
-If the alignment is off that can cause them to wear more on the inside or outside tread areas. A tire rotation will only transfer the abnormal wear to the other tire(s).
-More wear in the middle or outside tread areas is caused by too high or too low tire pressure. A tire rotation will not address this type of wear.
-Driving habits greatly effect tire wear. One driver may get 50,000 miles from their tires while others may only get 20,000 from the same tires. A tire rotation will only equalize that wear to the other tires.

There are a few pro's and con's regarding tire rotation.
-If the car is a lease regular tire rotation can equalize wear so you don't end up paying for tires at lease return. They will nail you for any tire that is 4/32" or less.
-If you are buying the car you have more options. There are many opinions about this, Google may be of some help.

My feelings are they are probably just merchandising a tire rotation to make a little CP money while doing your 10k.
