My volvo v60 tailgate strut looks pretty ****tty. last summer it started to have some rust metal shay coming out of the strut and it seems not holding it. During the winter it was completely broken (the spring rust and seized). Once you open it, it will drop immediately(I got hit hard couple times). finally, I found the correct part number just order one to replace my completely broken side.

I tried to take it apart but the spring seems rust and seized. basically, there is no more tension in the spring and it won't release.

I went with most of the comments and that a software update was not a necessary requirement. Got two new strut from my local Volvo dealer and replaced two very worn parts due to water ingress.
Fully operational without falling and banging heads and all without any software updates. Someone just trying their luck for more money. Hope this helps someone else.

I'm sorry didn't see your message. Yeah, it didn't require software updates. Yours look better than mine, I got one completely seized up. And I only replace one, the other i flood with silicon wd40. it should last a bit longer.

I asked the dealership couple months ago. they quote me around CAD$1500 to replace both. but now turns out $300 for part and 20 min for install
