Many dutch drivers with the same issue. If you are lucky you can get compensation at the Volvo dealer. It is a design flaw. The rainwater can enter the component

 

After replacing do these need a software update. I have been quoted cost and an update required. Just can’t get my head around swapping part for same part and needing to pay Volvo for software.

 

They won't work without a software update?? Really?

 

I have had both my struts replaced under warranty at around 58 000 km, one of them had a rusty leak and I told the technician to change both of them so they did. Doesnt give you any valuable info other than it seems to be common.

 

I went with most of the comments and that a software update was not a necessary requirement. Got two new strut from my local Volvo dealer and replaced two very worn parts due to water ingress.
Fully operational without falling and banging heads and all without any software updates. Someone just trying their luck for more money. Hope this helps someone else.

 

I'm sorry didn't see your message. Yeah, it didn't require software updates. Yours look better than mine, I got one completely seized up. And I only replace one, the other i flood with silicon wd40. it should last a bit longer.

I asked the dealership couple months ago. they quote me around CAD$1500 to replace both. but now turns out $300 for part and 20 min for install

 

Also had mine replaced after 40000km because of a grinding noise and also a bit of rust colored dust. Only one had the fault but volvo replaced both under warranty.

 

My volvo v60 tailgate strut looks pretty ****tty. last summer it started to have some rust metal shay coming out of the strut and it seems not holding it. During the winter it was completely broken (the spring rust and seized). Once you open it, it will drop immediately(I got hit hard couple times). finally, I found the correct part number just order one to replace my completely broken side. View attachment 199377

I tried to take it apart but the spring seems rust and seized. basically, there is no more tension in the spring and it won't release.
