Has anyone experience this issue? I have a 2015.5 S60 T5, when accelerating, I get this ticking/clicking noise for about a second or so. And it feels like its losing power. Usually occurs between 3k to 4K rpm. I feel like I don't get that quick torch. Any idea?

Does it only occur once, right after you start driving? If so its an ABS self check, and the power loss is just the brakes quickly being applied.

it seems to occur multiple times but not when i am already cruising at higher speed. If I were to stop and go again I will hear it again esp If I step hard on the accelerator, I can usually hear it but it only last for about 1 to 2 seconds. anyway to turn the ABS self check off to test?

Can you paint a more detailed picture, something like " after i start car, drive for a few minutes, get on a highway, and the noise/hesitation occurs everytime you stomp it ....."?

If if occurs multiple times, its not the ABS self check. That only occurs once at low speed. Is this a Drive-e or 5 cylinder T5?

This is the Drive-e turbo model.

as I start driving, I usually don't accelerate rightaway coming out of my street, but when I get to the main road, I step on it and I would usually hear it at that time.

wonder if the turbo is trying to come online? might have to take it to dealer to have it checked.

Please report back, and Welcome to the forum!

Another good place to check for issues or interesting topics is the XC60 forum as many of us over there have the same configs as the S/V 60.

This sounds like pinging to me. I'd try a different gas station first and/or higher octane gas if you aren't already using premium.

Hard to believe a modern (computer/sensor-controlled ignition/timing/detonation/airflow/fuel flow) car will ping...

If the quality of the gas is poor enough, or there is water in the gas, it could be possible. The engine can only compensate so much and still run.

I have been using 93. The owner's manual states:
Volvo recommends premium fuel for best performance, but using 87 octane or above will not affect engine reliability.
Putting around town I have no doubt that 87 is just fine. But lots of power and revs means more boost pressure and more heat and that's what causes fuel to start burning too early (and ping). The ECU detects that via knock sensors and retards timing before it can get bad enough to hurt anything. I suspect that's what you are experiencing when it loses power. You can take it to the dealer if you want but I'd just try higher octane first. It sounds like your driving style might call for it.

FWIW my former Prius did this but only in hot weather. I ran high-test in that from May through September and was able to run 87 the rest of the year.

what grade do you recommend? I have been using regular so far since Volvo said I can use that. I will try premium on my next fill up and test that out.
Like zircular said try 93, from a name brand station (Exxon, Shell, Sunoco etc). It makes sense that you hear the popping in that RPM range if it is indeed pinging. Regular gas can do that in a turbo car if its of a low quality. Yes Volvo says you can use it, but they also say performance will degrade.

Thanks... will try with 93. I will let you know how it goes.

I doubt it's the octane. Gas being as stupidly expensive as it is in My city, I have gone to lower (cheaper) octane gas on a number of occaissions and never had that kind of pinging. Performance does suffer yes but no pinging noise, ever. Could it be a valve or an injector that is making the clicking noise?

OK so after putting 93, I still heard the clicking/ticking noise when accelerating but it wasn't as bad or loud as when I was using regular gas. Volvo service also didn't find anything since everything checked out OK and they weren't able to reproduce the noise plus there was not error code in the system. But they did update the software on the car.

#31295479-5 - 2.0 Service update (software update)

anyone know how can I find out what this update did?

I will continue to use 93 and see how it works out for me.

Thanks for all the help and ideas.

I have the same/similar problem on my 2015 XC60 T5 Drive-e. Whenever I start accelerating slowly and then increase power I hear a mechanical sounding clicking (but not transmission sounding) and then the car seems to loose power. I notice this on a particular freeway onramp that has a sharp right turn at the beginning and then requires rapid acceleration to get up to merging speed. When the clicking occurs the resulting decrease of power means it takes noticeably longer to get up to freeway speeds.

I am interested to see if you have noticed the problem continue since the upgrade. I have only used premium gas.
