I'm ready to change my air filter on my T5 and I noticed that the original one had a mesh padding laying on side that faces the intake. The filters I see online don't seem to have such "padding". Is that normal? Do I need that?

Thanks!

That padding keeps the air intake quiet, take it off and you'll hear the turbo more! Nothing wrong if you don't have it or remove it; I always remove it on my Volvo's.

I ripped off the padding.

Question: Is that on all OEM Volvo filters or just the original/factory one?

Also, would that improve the MGP?

I think its OEM.. I went with K&N.. DOnt ask about perf increases Gas Mileage.. There is another thread on that.. (Probably 5)..

Either way you shouldn't need the padding.
