In deep negotiations with somebody and their 2011 C30r that is totaled and is being sold as an entire “parts” car, but they don’t want the trouble of going through it all and selling.. Wondering a couple questions…
1. Do I have to pay sales tax on a car with a salvage title? It is an out of state purchase, and wouldn’t be too much, just wondering.
2. For each part that I sell on Swedespeed, Facebook Marketplace, and Ebay, I have to pay a sales tax for each part, depending the circumstance?
3. Anybody interested in parts, let me know, the engine, transmission, and engine bay are fine, it is the driver side rear that is beyond repair. Interior seems good too.

In Upstate NY, but assuming most parts will be shipped, depending the size… Also, car has 108k miles, however exterior and interior before accident seem to be in really good shape.

Only speaking from personal experience here in NM, you should not have to pay taxes as long as the car is never registered. It’s essentially being sold as scrap to be dismantled.

You will pay taxes and fees with any selling site you use. I suggest advertising here and on Facebook, and using paypal, Venmo or cashapp to sale and save on fees, however PayPal is the only one that offered buyer protection of the three, market place, eBay for large pieces, mercari for small less than 1lb pieces.

Selling local for cash is best obviously, but there are people who NEED some parts so don’t shy away from using eBay and naming your price for shipping. It’s expensive but someone will pay if they really want their car back.

Pics would be nice to see what’s good, the body kit is probably what most people want, followed by r design trim like grills, pedals and steering wheels.

I’ll be interested in the dash gauges.

As for shipping, make friends with local UPS ship site workers, easier to apply friends and family rates. Use USPS for anything small and Fedex freight for anything palletized.

As far as tax on individual parts.... I'm no tax advisor but as far as I know, if you sell less than 20k worth of product within a given year and have less than 200 total transactions within a given year, you won't get a 1099 to file it on your returns (per eBay you must exceed both to receive one). Should you? Probably... but people should do a lot of things. This is all through PayPal goods and services, eBay, and Facebook of course. PayPal F&F wouldn't really be a factor, nor would in person sales. Each state is different though, I'm in NY. Also, Facebook and eBay charge tax on all sales anyways so you are clear there on the individual sales.

In GA, I bought a car with a salvage title from an insurance auction. I only had to pay a sales tax, as if it were a purchase of goods. I parted out this car and recycled the shell, providing the recycler with the salvage title at the time. This was all completed within the fiscal year.

Buying a salvage title from a private individual can be a bit different. For both of your property tax purposes, this title should be transferred into your name. This will come with a small fee. But this is worth doing... If the title remains in the previous owners name, you may not be able dispose of the VIN marked chassis. The previous owner could also claim property theft, so make sure you have a bill of sale. Depending on the previous owner's state laws, they may have to pay an annual fee for any vehicles (regardless of title status) registered in their name, so they'll want this car out of their name.

I also bought a car with a clean title, but that had been damaged and was not road worthy. In this case, we wrote up a bill of sale that stated the condition of the car, got in notarized, and I provided this to the tag office at the time of title transfer. The clean title was transferred to my name and they cut the registration fees in half because I was not getting a tag. They simply provided me with a form to fill out, so in the event that I did fix the car and need a license plate, I wouldn't have to pay full registration fees again.

2. Private classifieds do not require sales tax. Sites like ebay do require sales tax from the purchaser, which they pay at the time of the transaction. As stated, so long as what you sell remains below a certain threshold, then you do not need to pay taxes as if you were a store.

3. Take my word, every body is interested in parts. This means nothing until you have the money in your pocket. Parting out cars can be profitable but laborious and take a long time to actually sell things. Only about 2% of the people who commented with their interested on my part out threads actually followed through with the transaction.

Okay, an update so far, I was supposed to pick up the parts car today, however I spent 16 hours of traveling yesterday picking up my new C30r that I am super happy to be the new owner of. The parts car is three hours away from me, it is raining today, and I am tired from yesterday, so I delayed picking up the car. It looks like we will shoot for Friday or this weekend. Again, any interest, let me know, and hopefully within about a week, I could potentially start selling and shipping/come pick up parts. And here are pics of the car, that were in the listing, no pics of the interior, but I am being told it is being protected from the elements with a tarp, hopefully it is secured tightly..
I am thinking of keeping the three wheels and tires, rims look good, and therefore would be in the market for a fourth wheel and tire, let me know if you know of a listing, or have a single one for sale.

Yes sorry, should have updated, been super busy with work. The car was a hour and half more south than I intended, totaling more than 8 hours of driving, so I’ve decided to wait and let one of my buddies go check this out before I commit. Sorry for the delay, I will post an update again soon.
