Re: 2010 V70 R Designs @ DARCARS, Rockville MD (Needsdecaf)

It looks like the 2010 exterior updates to the S80 also carry over to the V70? I wonder if the 3.2 feels peppier as reported in the 2010 S80 review posted here?
THe R-design suspension upgrades are going to make a world of difference.

Nice to see some pics, would like to see your driving experience with the R-design chassis.
And... at the beginning of August delivery of my new V70 is a month closer
Mine was ordered without the roofrails, in europe that's an option an I it without those bars!

I almost fell out of the car.
Sorry, only this pic from today. It was raining when I left so I didn't bring the camera, as I didn't anticipate spending much time outside of the car. Alas, it cleared a bit and I took that one pic with the cell phone before it crapped out (my cell camera has issues).

My thoughts:
1) The 3.2 in the 2010 models definitely have more beans. There is some throttle trickery going on (tough to take off smoothly) but it's definitely not inadequate. For those of you who thought the old 3.2 is adequate, I deemed it (personally) inadequate. This one is now adequate. I'd wait for the 2011 DI engine, though, personally. Or keep my fingers crossed for a T6. Caveat - this car had delivery miles, the engine is surely tight.
2) No AWD = torque steer and compromised steering feeling. I am not a huge fan of FWD, though.
3) R-Design accents are very nice. Makes the car look of a piece and much more aggressive. The car doesn't look very lowered, I remember Johann saying the same thing about his car (this car had 10 miles on it). The dual exhausts, wheels, wing, satin accents around the fog lights, etc, really make it look sharp. This car had roof rails (an option?) which I would delete or not order.
4) Suspension - very nice upgrade from the stock V70 or XC70. None of the floatiness that I cannot stand in the other cars (again, please, my opinion, I know others disagree). It's not overly firm, but there was some flintines to it.
5) Handling steering: I could not tell. This car had the Pirelli Rossos replaced by all season tires. Not unusual for this climate but they were replaced by....wait for it.....P6 All Seasons. These are decidedly NOT a performance oriented tire and are completely at odds with the suspension tuning. Steering turn in was sharp followed by a secondary "wag" as the tires took their set. Terrible. If you want cushy tires, go with the stock suspension. I am sure it is a much better fit. But honestly, I could not make a determination about the car with these tires. At least I hope it was the tires, otherwise it's another case of odd Volvo bushing choices.
Who knew P6's came in 245/40 - 18's ??
6) Seats. MUCH better than the other EUCD V70 / XC70 seats to both my wife and I. Again, personal opinion. Neither of us are much fans of the V70 / XC70 seats. We are always feeling like we're going to slide out and that the cushion is too short. These, not so. The additional bolstering is subtle, but noticeable. The leather is softer than the standard seats, and we both liked the two tone charcoal / light gray color scheme. My wife thought they were more comfortable and supportive but wants to take the car on an hour long trip to see...she has always had issues in the XC / V 70 with the bottom cushion being too short and making her legs go numb.
7) The new R design wheel is nice. The HUGE Iron mark in the middle isn't nearly as bad in person. I think the "aluminum" is plastic, though. The perforated leather is nice, though, as is the shaping.
8) Interior, being pretty much the same as any other V70 / XC 70 shares those vehicles plusses and minuses. But compared to back to back driving to my 2004 V70R, getting back into the old R to go home felt slightly claustrophobic. The newer car is bigger and it makes good use of that size by being much airier. Cargo space is on par, rear seat room is improved. In addition, the rear seats have "stadium" presence vs. the P2 wagon, so even with the not so much legroom sitting behind myself (I'm 6'2" and sit way back), it's still comfy and not claustrophobic as you can see around the person in front of you.
9) Our 2.5 year old LOVED the two stage boosters, although he is a bit small to legally use them now and I certainly would not feel comfortable with him in them for another year at least. But they are a HUGE plus, since they allow the rear seat to be like a LIMO for kids (sitting up means that they have MONGO legroom). There is NO WAY he could kick the seat.
Overall, I liked the car. With a T6 AWD powertrain it would be exactly what I want in a vehicle. Stylish, unique, practical, reasonably sporty (I don't need an RS6 Avant), etc. For me with the FWD and no turbo, I'd really have to think about it. And I'd definitely wait for the DI engine as I said before. BTW, EPA ratings were 22 / 27 even with the non-DI engine. DI should change or increase that while adding at least 20 HP..

By the way, this car is MUCH bigger than the P2 wagon! Length, width, height. Especially length!
