I have a 2007 xc70 with 22,500 miles and the front brakes already need replacement, they are down to 3 mm already. Is this normal for this car, I get on average 38,000 miles on my 2000 s70. My wife does most of the driving at an average speed of 21 MPH, so mostly city, but I know she is not to hard on the brakes. It seams this is to soon to change brake pads. I will try diferent pads.

Re: 2007 XC70 front brakes (josehb)

Jose, It is true Volvo as a soft brake pad, hence the heavy brake dust on the wheels...that said the oem brakes stop very well but the sacrifice (IMHO) is the dust and short pad life. I have after the 1st pad replacement gone to a Brembo Rotor and Akebono ceramic brake pad combo... close to oem bite but little or no dust...you can get this combo from online suppliers, I have used FCP Groton...355 bucks for a 4 wheel rotor pad replacement!!! Re: 2007 XC70 front brakes (2.4asr)

I am just sizing up doing this. The dealer wanted $663 for front pads and rotors!
Do you need any shims or anything else to make this perfect? I have previously had bad experience with Brembo discs on a Mercedes - good stopping, but too much squeal.

Good, I was considering getting the Akebono pads from FCP Groton, they have good prices. I will get then but pass on changing the rotors , that will be for the next replacement. By the way I replaced the front rotors on my S70 with Brembo rotors from FCP Groton, they are great rotors.
Thanks,
I think volvo should have increased the size of the rotors and pads on the XC70, which weights around 500 lbs more than the S70 but uses basically the same brake setup.

No squeal at all on volvos. You do not need shims but put grease on back of the pads before installing. Go to this site below for instructions how to replace. good luck.
http://volvospeed.com/bay13.htm

Thanks for link.
I found out I have 11" rotors rather than 12" (don't ask how!).
Does anyone know part numbers for appropriate calipers?
I thought it was strange a 2005 still had the smaller diameter rotors.

I'm just about ready to swap the 12in rotors onto the wifes. I have test fit the calipers and they fit the 16in wheels, just waiting on rotors and pads. Should know how this all works out in about 2 weeks. Only difference between the 11 and 12 is the adapter and rotor. Calipers and pads are the same. I just got rebuilt calipers with brackets as hers has quite a few miles on it.

Man, now I am pissed off with this job due to my poor prior preparation.
I have the caliper bracket numbers 92 09 722. Per my investigation on other forums, I bought 86 02 456 to fit round the 302mm brembos I bought from FCP Groton.
They clear the diameter but pitch on bolt hole spacing is too narrow!
Existing carriers are 5.5", 86 02 456 are ~4.25" pitch.
Does anyone know for certain what carrier is needed to fit on 5.5" pitch mounts?
I am about ready to send the rotor and pad kit back to FCPG for replacement with 11".
Oh yeah, anyone want to buy brand new 86 02 456 carriers...............

the big brackets have LH 94 34 185 RH 94 34 186 on them. Mine had the 722s on them. Where did you get the 456 #?
