Hi All

Looking for opinions before I tear into it.

2006 XC70 lost forward and reverse motion.
It happened while driving, short metallic sounding clunk, engine revved up and that was it.

So far I checked the following:
- transmission fluid level is fine and clean. (has been drained and filled once a year).
- VIDA does not show any TCM codes.
- with the car on a lift. Checked the front axles, both are engaged and fine. Spinning one wheel by hand makes the other one spin in the opposite direction indicating the differential is fine.
- the prop shaft will also spin if you hold one front wheel steady and turn the other by hand.

While the car is in D, R or manual mode. There is no power being transferred to the wheels. It won't move.

Has anyone had similar issues ? The car has 150k miles on the clock.
Thanks in advance.

Will VIDA tell you if you have hydraulic pressure? If no pressure, then either a failed pump or something on the input side, stripped TC splines, etc. If there is pressure, then something else internal. Blew the splines on a Ford AX4N many years ago. That was what the transmission shop did for diagnosis.

Great suggestion !
I will check the hydraulic pressure with vida.
Can't remember if that number was there last time I looked.

Mine crapped out at 130k on a 2003 2.4t... was messing about in the snow when it happened. That's fwd though. So take the following with some salt -
Tranny specialist told me it was shot internally, I just replaced it. $600 on ebay, 150 for shipping, and then 500 to get it in.
Worked fine other than the 2-3 flare that is common with em up to 180k miles.
From what I hear, after 2004 it got better because they fixed the neutral braking feature that was killing them. The XC70 might have been through a bit of towing/offroad though, you never know what an owner actually did to em even with proper service records.
Good luck, but I'd be prepared for the worst!
