Hi all,

I've read a few posts about the anti-skid message but I'm hoping to get more clarification.

Yesterday the "anti-skid service required" message came on shortly after the "Time for regular maintenance" message appeared. I have just over 84K miles on the car.

I recently had an alignment done (last week) and I'm also aware that A) my front brakes are just about due for replacement, and B) I seem to have an out-of-balance wheel because I get a noticeable vibration around 60mph. I mentioned these items in case any of them may be related.

I live in Hawaii and there's not dealership here and I have yet to purchase the VIDA/DICE gear. My regular mechanic has a pretty high-end diagnostic reader which he's used for some other stuff, but I don't know if that's sufficient to dig into this issue.

So I guess my first question is; can any of the issues I mentioned be related to these messages, and my 2nd question is - should I try having my mechanic take a look with his diagnostic reader or do I really need to pony up and setup the VIDA/DICE stuff?

I appreciate any advice anyone can offer. Thanks a bunch!

Ask your mechanic if he has VIDA / DICE. It's usually the best way to start to diagnose issues. It could be several things - e.g. clock spring. I'd guess this is unrelated to the issues you describe.

The code needs to be read. If an SAS, Steering Angle Sensor, or clock spring code is displayed, you probably need to replace this part.
There is an internal ribbon cable. From center position, the wheel can turn 3.5 turns in each direction. If the message is intermittent, when you turn almost full lock and the message turns on,
the internal ribbon cable has a broken or open spot. Turning back, it can make contact again and the message turns off. The SAS code will still be there until it is erased. If replacing the SAS,
a calibration reset has to be performed in the ABS, DSTC section. DSTC or Anti-skid calibrate, needs to know the center position of the steering wheel. DSTC keeps track of the steering wheel angle at all times in case of emergency, braking, turning, skidding or any sudden movements. DSTC = Dynamitic Stability Traction Control. If you are going fast, swerve to avoid something and the car starts to roll over, as you go into a roll over type event before the outside tires leaves the ground the ABS/DSTC system has already started evasive action. The ABS knows that the outer wheel speed has slowed in relation to the inner wheel speed. The YAW sensor under the pass seat is an electronic gyroscope. Speed, per the 4-ABS sensors, Steering wheel movement/position and YAW sensor movement has already started to close the throttle plate and apply brakes to the 2 inner tires to try to decrease the rollover event.
The repair work done, has nothing to do with the anti-skid code. The ribbon cable breaks and is it time for a clock spring.
If you do not replace the clock spring, the DSTC roll over protection may not work.
Everything else will work as normal.
