I have done a lot of research on the extended warranty recently as I bought my 2004 V70R in December with 34k miles and no CPO.
Look into Easycare Gold Totalcare warranty. It is the same exact warranty as the Volvo VIP. ( Volvo Vip is administed through Easycare, you can see that on the VIP contract). I read both contracts and they are word for word indentical except that with VIP you have to go through a Volvo dealer for repairs, with Easycare Gold, you can go anywhere. Both Volvo dealers I called offered both the Easycare Gold and VIP, but Easycare is cheaper.
In my situation I wanted a 60 month/100k VIP warranty (60 months from inservice date of the car). VIP was about $2,100 plus tax w/ $100 deductible. ( I drive 20k miles a year plus)
Easycare warranty starts from purchase date, so in that case I needs a 36 month/100k to take me to the same coverage date (2/2009 or 100k miles). Price was $1,250 plus tax w/$100 deductible.
My mother work for the dealership so both of these prices were at $100 over cost. But at you can see Easycare is about $850 cheaper.
Totalcare coverage includes rental reimbursement, road hazard for tires and rims, etc. Easycare is owned by Ford.
I was thrilled to get 50k miles of coverage for $1250 plus tax.

Hope this helps.
FYI - the guy at my Mom's dealership says he usually makes $300 to $500 profit on each warranty. So retail prices would have been about $2,500 for the VIP and $1,650 for easycare, so make sure to negotiate the crap out of it.
Brian
2004 V70R
