I have a 2005 V70R with 117K on it. I bought it new at Boston Volvo but I am ready to give up on them. they are trying to sell me a $4K valve job. Check engine light went on and that led them to do a leak down test. Compression was low on 2 and 3 but BV says they fixed it by "decarbonizing" Still running very rough at low speeds( 2000-3000RPM). Brought the car to Peabody Auto clinic and they can't give me an answer on whether to keep or trade. they say it needs a new mass air sensor at $400 and that MIGHT fix the problem but no promises. I have always run premium and used Mobil 1 but I don't know if engine is toast or if it is easily fixed. I am willing to put another $2k into the car if I can get to 150K miles.
Any ideas or opinions? I can get $12K now for it in trade; will that go to zero if I keep driving it without any work?

There was an issue with valve springs a while back.
Don't know if there was a TNN for it at all....

Depends on if you've reached your tipping point on troubleshooting costs. Tough call, but if you can get $12K on a trade, you might want to cut your losses and move on.

12K on a trade w/ those miles is pretty reasonable...?

if you have not had slave cylinder or angle gear, I would trade...
each one of those is -2k for your bank acct (potentially)
BTW how do you drive??? are you doing something abnormal??

If I were you, I would do the following:
a) buy some electrical contact cleaner and disassemble and clean the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. Don't actually rub the sensor element with anything (although a delicate rub with q-tip may be OK) just spray the sensor down and let drain a few times;
b) a full treatment with seafoam (google search on swedespeed)
c) after the seafoam purchase auto-rx (google it, you'll find the site that sells it) and do an oil change with a group III synthetic (pennzoil platinum, castrol syntec, etc.) NOT a full group IV or V synthetic like Mobil 1, Redline or (most) Amsoil, as the group IV and V synthetics have polarized molecules that interfere with the esters in auto-rx.
The auto-rx clean and rinse cycles will take 2500 and 3000 miles, respectively, so you'll have to be OK with making that distance. Hopefully the MAF cleaning and the seafoam will increase drivability so that the auto-rx has a chance to do a slow and thorough clean of the valves and rings.
Hope that helps,
J

Wow! Thanks for the detailed answer. I will try it and hopefully eke out another year. I was not looking forward to the Honda Fit!

And See What The Dealer and Volvo Gets You.
I Do Not Believe In The Newer Volvo Service Intervals For This Exact Reason.
It May or May Not Be The Reason Why Your Having This Issue With The Valves.
I Have A 94 850 Turbo With 230k Miles On The Original Engine, Turbo, Transmission and The Thing Runs Like A Stripped Ass Ape. Doesn't Smoke or Burn Oil. Premium Fuel Always.
I Maintain It The Old Volvo Way From 30 Years Ago. That's How These Cars Got Their Reputation For Longevity. I have been doing Used Oil Analysis on my 2004 V70R for the past 5 years and I find that using a high quality synthetic oil (Amsoil 5W30 or GC 0W30) I can safely make it about 6-6.5 K with my driving habits (lots of short trips about 70/30 city/highway). Not sure I would recommend any longer intervals than this unless they were mostly highway miles. Small block high performance turbo engines are hard on oil!

There is supposedly a really good Volvo indy up on the north shore . . . might be called Precision Auto . . . one of their employees posts here occasionally.
Ha . . . found their info in a recent post:
Precision Auto Inc. 60 Main st. Rowley, MA 01969
Full Vadis and Vida. 15yrs Dealership Master Tech owned and operated
Approved Ipd swaybar installer.
$60/hr labor rate.
978-948-7778
Precisionvolvo.com
Might be worth a second opinion from them. Good luck.
- Mark

Re: 2005 V70R-Should I keep it? (catarch)

I would expect the engine to easily go to your stated objective of 150K miles. I have over 125K on my 2005 V70R, and no rough runnning. It does not go to Volvo for routine service, I do it all myself, and oil changes are typically at 5K with Castrol Syntec. I have cleaned the MAF once, just as a matter of routine, and spark plugs once at about 90K miles as I recall.
If compression is now within about 15% cylinder to cylinder, I would not expect rough running from a compression issue. I would look more towards the MAF, a vacuum leak, etc.
As has been stated here, the engine is no doubt the stronger link, the failure points are angle gear, slave cylinder, etc., and they are $2K each.
It is tough to replace a V70R. There just are not too many wagons with a 6 speed manual, and 300 HP, (on a good day).

12K?
RUN with it.
I nearly bought an 05 V70 6 speed today with 99K miles, nice wagon.
It sold out from under me at 10K, the trade in was like $9000.

Didn't get your hand up fast enough? I was shocked when the guy sold it to me for one bid. Very nice car. Needs a left rear wheel bearing though.

You could have bought it for $9500 if the auctioneer wasn't such an assh**e
One bid, yours, and "SOLD" just like that.
Never seen anything like it.
I gave my person there a not to go over 10,400, but it sold before he turned his head around, weird
