I've got this weird problem occuring intermittently with the A/C on my 85K+ car. I'll be driving and the A/C seems to start blowing hot air from the outside (I'm in Texas so I do mean HOT air!)
This has happened intermittently 4-5 times in the past 5-6 weeks. The switch still shows the A/C on, and the fan is on. I've tried shutting off the engine, waiting a bit, and restarting to no avail, but once I park the car for even just 10 minutes, it'll start back up fine blowing nice cold air.
The battery is less than a year old, and the thermostat registers normal.
Any ideas?

Re: 2005 V50 A/C problem (cmoorse)

Welcome to the Forums! If you look like 8 threads down from the one you just created there is someone that posted about the same issue, maybe someone has responded with a solution on that thread. Good luck!

Re: 2005 V50 A/C problem (carreragt7)

I saw that, but my problem is a bit different. The A/C will come on at start up blowing cold air. Ten to 15 minutes down the road it just starts blowing hot air. The change is not instantly noticed, either. It's like a gradual change. Really tough when you've pulled onto the freeway and it's 103 outside. I've actually pulled over, shut the car down and restarted the car to see if that helped. The only thing that's helped is to park the car for a substantial length of time.
I had a GMC Envoy that would not start the A/C up when I started the car, but if I shut it down, waited 30 sec. or so and restarted, the A/C would work. It was a computer problem. The problem I'm having with the V50 is different. The A/C's shutting down mid-drive.

Re: 2005 V50 A/C problem (MagoonR)

After reading that thread, it doesn't really address the issue all that much.
I too have the same problem of nice and cold then about 3-5 minutes later it's blowing hot. Luckily my commute isn't far so I don't notice it much but it's definitely there and after all my software updates I have had over the various years, none have seemed to address the issue.
Could it be a blown Blower Motor or something along those lines? Not sure if these cars use any refrigerant but could it need a recharge?
Also, I notice that after letting it blow super hot air for awhile and the A/C is off, then I switch it back it seems to be a temporary fix. Maybe the "re-calibration" is what I need to do as well. But that's not a fix, just a band-aid to a severed hand...

Re: 2005 V50 A/C problem (Tarheelvolvo)

I finally took my car into the dealer: A/C clutch was failing at high temperatures. Good news is the A/C clutch can be replaced without needing the entire compressor replaced. Bad news is that labor & parts was about $750, but our dealer gave us a 15% discount. All in all, it beats paying out for a new compressor, and it's definitely the only non-warranty, non-routine maintenance I've had to pay for in over 85,000 miles. ... and the car is already paid for. I can't complain too much.
Also, I had noticed an odd smell occasionally for a couple weeks prior to this a/c problem. I never connected the two, but apparently, the smell was from the clutch getting hot.
Hope this helps.

I also notice a smell. $750 for a new clutch, yowza that's pricey... And it seems odd that it would break as mine only has 80K on it. This should be a 100K+mileage item I feel like, heck even 150K+ maybe.
Seeing if this is a DIY job or not...
Any other MY05's seeing this happen?

Re: 2005 V50 A/C problem (cmoorse)

First post so I'll start with a positive.... the "Swedish Missile" has got great lines and the most luminous high beams that I have ever driven behind. My V50 just cracked the 100k mark and drops the AC when outside temps approach 100F. My temp fix has been REC. AIR/ Max LO Temp setting. Makes sense that the clutch could be going as this setting probably eliminates/reduces clutch intervals. This doesn't cure the problem, simply provides cold air in ten minute cycles. I'll have to look into the DIY approach. Who's going to Xerox me a Service Manual?

Re: 2005 V50 A/C problem (manwithgun)

Just got off the phone with my dealer and they seem to think it's not the compressor but either the CCM or a switch that's freezing and not letting the compressor kick back on. They gave me a suggestion to let the car get into it's "broken" state and test the compressor to see if it's pulling 12volts or not. If it IS getting 12 volts then it might be the clutch is busted. It it's NOT getting 12 volts then it would be a switch somewhere that isn't getting flipped properly to kick the compressor back on.
I'm personally hoping it's a switch since those are like $10 but much tougher to track down than an easier but more expensive compressor fix...
