I have a 2005 S60. Base model. Cloth interior, stick shift.
Head Unit is a HU-650. No CD Changer or Navigation. As near as I can tell it has six speakers. A component woofer and tweeter in the front doors. A woofer with a possible coax tweeter in the back doors. Nothing mounted on the rear deck. I believe that this is the entry level speaker system. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I am finding that the EQ curve, especially for the rear channels, seems to be *really* boosting low frequencies. At elevated volumes, the result is some wicked bad distortion. I am curious if anyone has mapped the EQ for this head unit?
Are there any adjustments available besides the mid-EQ setting? The Bass tone knob on the seems to have a center frequency too high to really get at these lower frequency octaves.
One more question, are the line-outs provided by the DIN connector endowed with the same EQ characteristics?
Thanks for any information you can provide!
--Matt

Matt,
Unfortunately the line outputs have the same modified EQ output.
Have you tried playing witht the internal EQ levels? Turn off radio > press and hold source button in > turn radio back on while continuing to hold the source button in > after about 10 seconds display will show EQ level options > Rotate the source button to adjust levels > press to advance to next channel (front low 1 front low 2, front mid, front high, rear low, etc)
Other than that, the only other option is an automated device like a JL cleansweep 441. I had one for a while, it does make a nice flat eq curve, but you loose the ability to use the steering wheel controls for volume control.

Thanks for the information. I tried your suggestion regarding the EQ menu access. No joy. Head Unit turned on and operated normally with the source button pushed in. Perhaps they locked out that functionality with a firmware update. I wonder if that can be undone for a fee.

Hmm, I can't see them getting rid of that function; really odd. On a 650 you can also try the >>| button (same process) to access some of the settings, it might at least allow you to reset to the factory defaults.

ss60: I think they did remove access to the hidden menu's of the hu-613/803 in the HU-650/850. The only EQ is by the knobs on the HU.

Unfortunately the secret equalizer menu was eliminated during the audio program refresh in 2005.
