Does anyone have experience with both of these vehicles?
This blurb is from Car.com:
Volvo S40 Advantages:
Traction Control Standard
Engine (5 cylinder vs. 4 Cylinder)
6 Speed Manual Transmission
Subaru Legacy Advantages:
CD Changer Standard
Leather Seats Standard
32 More Horsepower (250 vs. 218)
Basically I'm in the market to replace my Miata so that I'll be able to tote my new baby around. With that in mind, I'd like to replace the miata with something that either handles nimbly enough to satisfy me stock from the factory, or be mod' able enough to reach that same level of performance.
Any opinions?
Thanks in advance,
--james

Re: 2005 S40 T5 AWD vs. 2005 Subaru Legacy GT (jholder)

Hi James; welcome to Swedespeed. This is a very common comparison here and there are several extensive threads discussing the two cars. Car and Driver magazine also did a comparison test involving these two cars, and there is a thread on that test (with links to the source material on C/D). If you search the archives for "Legacy" you'll find four or five threads of discussion to read through. Here are a couple to get you started. Good luck!
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=26336
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=41300

T5, able to cut into the low 30 MPG, IMO the Subaru will pull low 20s under the same driving, the T5 can run on cheap fuel thanks to the low pressure turbo, the T5 can use and make turbo boost during 90% of normal driving vs 10% for the Subaru, HP sells, but you drive torque.

The Legacy GT (as well as the Mazdaspeed6) are great machines. In fact, I would have bought the MS6 if only the back seats folded.
S40=more refinement
LGT=faster

But the S40 got the shaft as far as performance is concerned.

The fact that the only tranny available on the Legacy GT is a slushbox means that it's a worthless car to me.
The "sport" automatic on it is a complete POS. It literally takes 2 seconds to upshift.
If you want a more engaging driving experience with a decent motor get the Volvo.
That's what I did at least. YMMV.

well I've heard that about the SRT-4 and gee two races with them and it was about a wash
The T5 is a low pressure turbo able to deliver near instant torque and good MPG, meaning it works 99.99% of the time the GT is a high pressure turbo meaning you need hightest fuel and you have the normal turbo lag.
I don't know which setup I would take new, if the T5 were like say a S60 t5, I'm happy with my 32 MPG of drivable torque on cheap regular which I've been pumping lately, just for grins.

i know the legacy HP seems a bit overstated. i have friends here who dynoed theirs and they had about the same wheel hp as mine stock.
overall, its a good car and handling package, but i still prefer the volvo for its better refinement and looks.

both good cars, to me the choice is harder if you NEED 4WD, I did not so the T5 was a shoe in.

I test-drove both. I found the engine noise and the turbo lag in the Subaru annoying. Here in Maryland, I felt I could get by with the DSTC on the Volvo and didn't need the 4-wheel drive of the Subaru.
Also, the V50 turned out to cost less than the Legacy, since it was easier for me to order what I wanted in the Volvo and not pay for lots of bells-and-whistles that I didn't. The Subaru dealers wouldn't do that.

Re: (DavidR)

Not sure if I believe that 5-60 time for the Legacy GT. Car and Driver tested a 2.0L WRX 5-60 at 6.6 seconds, with a 0-60 time of 5.4
The 2.0L turbo in the 2002-2005 WRX pales in comparision to the 2.5L turbo in the new WRX/LGT in terms of low-end response and torque delivery.
The LGT is making over 40 more lbs-ft of torque at 2500RPM at the wheels versus the WRX. It peaks 250RPM higher, but still makes 45lbs-ft more at the wheels.
Gearing advantage goes slightly to the LGT as well.
The roughly 250 pound difference in weight between the wrx and LGT certainly isn't going to result in only a 0.3 difference in the 0-60 but a massive 1.0 second difference in 5-60 time. In fact, I would be less suspect if the WRX returned a 7.6 5-60 time and the LGT had a 6.6 time. Ayup, still slower than the Volvo, but much more reasonable.
And not that it matters much, the LGT manual is rated at 20 / 26 mpg, the auto is 19/25.

AWD volvo with the manual is 20 / 29 mpg, auto 20 / 28 mpg
Re: (Beanboy)

There is more to a car then absolute WOT performance and the low pressure turbo is more useful 99.99% of the time, that's why Volvo put it in the S40, Volvo could have used a high pressure setup for very little $$$ but volvo must have felt that most of their customers would prefer minimal turbo lag and good mpg and the ability to use cheap fuel as more important than the ability to win some types of drag races.
The new Mazda 3 turbo will be Ford's pocket rocket with 6 speed LSD, 250 HP and 400+ pounds lighter then the S40...
