So my head gasket just went in my 2005 S40 and I am considering my options here.
It looks like the repair cost for the HG is in the neighborhood of $1500-$2500 and the resale value for the car WITH blown HG is around $800-1000.
I am really open to recommendations here.

Doing it yourself is really the only option to save money here - the majority of that cost is shop time, sorry bud.

Buy a quality mechanic's square and a set of feeler gauges, check every axis on all 5 cylinders and the water jacket to see if the block's warped - if it is ya screwed. put a used engine in it or sell it.

If it's not, then get the head measured or measure it yourself and see if it is in/out of spec or millable. Would take a competent mechanic a half hour or so.

Doing the job yourself is up to you. It's a simple handtool kind of job requiring some extra oomph on the headbolts, but otherwise, it's easy enough.
