Re: 2005 S-80 Satelite radio question (John Miller)
Not sure about the 05, but the 06's are prepped for satellite when nav is present. It's just a melbus cable that's installed from the head unit to the trunk. More than likely yours will have it because it has nav.
I'm pretty sure all 05 and up head unit's are satellite capable. I hear the tuner install kits come with pretty big, outdated antenna. You may want to look into getting a newer micro antenna if you go with the kit.
I'm hearing the if the 05 S-80 is equipped with NAV, the both cables are present and all that is needed is the plug in trunk module ($450) for SAT activation, other than the subscription to the service.
I was told today by the dealership parts folks the SAT antenna is also the NAV GPS antenna so no outside antenna needed.
That would certainly be a cleaner and much easier installation if that were true, however at least on the S60 and V70 that is not the case, and an external, rather ugly, black molded antenna is used.
I have an '05 V70R, with NAV. and it is "Sat prepped", however if I opted for the Sat it would mean an external antenna, unless Volvo has now changed their mind and are using the GPS antenna with a duplexer. That will mean some performance degradation for both Sat and GPS. I know many felt that "Sat prepped" meant there was an embedded antenna, but that was not the case.
Tx for the info, understand completly about the duplexer and degraded rx as I have a ham radio license and will contact Volvo to determine the connector type for the SAT portion. Since XM has a "micro" antenna I would guess Sirius has one also. It just depends on the ANT connector on the module
