82K miles, last tranny service at 75K. Never had a lick of problems with my transmission. Until I was making a u-turn in my v70 2.5T and it suddenly dropped out of gear. I thought I bumped the shifter to neutral - but nope - no gears at all. As I rolled to a stop, I attempted to put it into park and got some gear grinding noise. It's as if the transmission is in neutral - even with engine off, and shifting into park, it does nothing. When you attempt to go into Park with engine running, you get the gear grinding noise.
Fluid is clean, no smells, no leaks.
CPO warranty expired last month BTW -
Any ideas? Tranny kaput? Or maybe it is linkage problem?

Sounds to me like you might have lost a CV joint, and the transmission is freewheeling on the differential. The grinding noise could be the differential spinning the broken CV joint while you pass through reverse.
Just a guess, the U-turn thing is what led me down this line of thinking. Definitely a weird problem though.

hmmm -I checked the linkage and it moves fine. How can I diagnose the CV joint?

Re: (seangh)

Well - it appears the passenger side axle has pulled out - which makes sense as I was making a hard u-turn to the drivers side. Looking under the car, I can see the axle spin while in drive.
Time to fix it - wish me luck!

Re: (Chilled Man)

i think that is a possibility. but, is there a circlip or pin that is supposed to retain the axle in the tranny?
edit; i have seen cv joints blow out the ball bearings and collapse, causing great pressure that may have pulled an drive half shaft out of a tranny.
just thinking and trying to help, good luck.
chilled has a lot of experience with this stuff, so listen. just a suggestion.

acutally on the driver side there is also a holder for the axle and that is bolted to the block of the engine so the passenger side would be impossilbe to pull out of the tranny and why theres no circle clip on that side.
but you can easly pull the CV apart .
passenger side has the circlip to hold it in the tranny and why that side is sometimes a PIA to get out

If the shaft is spinning, it's not pulled out of the tranny, it's pulled out of the hub. So either the retaining bolt unscrewed itself and the spline just fell out, or the CV joint is toast.

The sound would come and go, at any speed only for a second or too. Not sure what that is....

kinda sounds like the axle might have had some stuff in it or the hub bearing is on its way out.

Re: (Chilled Man)

Well - It' much worse now, so I'll be replacing the whole axle I guess. Just got a rebuilt OEM part from Napa...wish me luck - I'm going in....
EDIT: Got lucky and my brother the Fiat guru came by and helped me out. We had it buttoned in about an hour.
Runs great. Now for an alignment

Hi all, I know this is a fairly old thread... but I got the same exact issue this week with my '07 V70.
Earlier this week it happened when I was backing out of the driveway, wheels turned to the right, transmission was not engaging anymore with same noise (like if the gears were half-engaged... "TRRRRRRRRRR")... the ATF looked brown so I changed it right away (Gibbons method). Same issue happened this morning, but I noticed that the PARK was not engaging. I could start the car no problem, dashboard was showing correct position (P-R-D). I pushed the car out of the way, I let the motor on for a few minutes (it was cold here) and right after it engaged and I was able to bring it back home (500m).

I am having a front-end clunk for some months, and to me it sounds/feels like control arm bushing (had the same thing on my XC), but could it be the CV joint ??? The keyword here is intermittent... can a CV joint be intermittent ???

Doubtful. The Joint is either good and your car moves or its bad and the car doesnt move.

Unless there's so much play in the control arm that the splines in the CV are popping in and out. But still unlikely. Get the car inspected, at a shop if you can't do it yourself.

this is what happened when the driver side axle came out of the transmission. barely visible, but no movement. i'd check that first thing. back in the day i ended up paying $250 for the EMPI axle only because i had no knowledge about that.
