Cadillac CTSi V-Series
This is the first V-Series car that Cadillac will be bringing out to compete against Audi-S, BMW-M, Jaguar-R, Mercedes-AMG, Saab-Aero, and Volvo-R. Mark LaNeve says that the V-Series cars will not produce anything under 350hp.
Not too bad looking IMHO...

-Drew

someone on the C&D site noted that the Caddy designers never quite thought things through on the headlights; he noted that when it snows, the buildup over the headlights could block the effectiveness of the lamp assemblies . . . .
oops.

Now no one can ever tell why they have tail light in the front for all the Caddies.

I think it is cool that Cadillac is trying to be a world player in the luxury market. This will compete with the S4, S60 R and M3.
I'm still not a fan of GM, but it shows they are trying.
Too bad that Lincoln isn't giving something like this a try. Detune the S-Type R or take the blown motor out of the new Cobra and make a Lincoln LS HRL (Hot Rod Lincoln baby).
George
[This message has been edited by [email protected] (edited 08-29-2002).]

looks pretty neat
but they may need more than 350 hp to really compete against the euro competition...

Major contender. That big engine and stiff suspension is gonna put in the ball park with some of the big German manufacturers. This is a very serious Caddy. Not to be fooled with. It looks different but I wouldnt say bad. And with some fat tires and a body kit, I can see it turnin more than a few heads.

Rcently I was hanging out having a major Car-Geek discussion with a Volvo designer I was introduced to. One of the cars that came up in discussion was the Cadillac CTS. He wasn't a fan of it, giving me the fact that they took Cadillac design cues, but did so in a kitschy way (i.e. it's gonna look dated really quickly).
I'm of a different opinion. While I'm still warming up to the car (it'd do a lot better with a 17" wheel package IMHO), it takes some very distinctly cadillac design cues (eggcrate grill, round over round headlights, long tall taillights, and did what I never thought could be done....wrapped them in a modern design. I believe that if Cadillac sticks with the design direction that they've recently embraced and carefully evolve it (ala BMW up until recently), they'll have a nice brand on their hands. The next STS should be a 5-series competitor, RWD and manual tranny available etc. and the DTS should move upmarket to compete with the 7-series, A8 and the rest. It can be done, we'll see if it is.

And the DTS, what a horrible car. Both from the design standpoint and the type of materials inside. The nest models can be very different but I can't see GM doing anything that will bring them close to BMW.
Even teh CTS, they say it is so popular and it is bringing younger people to Cadillac. WHat a bunch of baloney! I just saw a report, in the Automotive News, where 95%+ (!) of CTS sales are coming from ex-owners of...Buick models, Chevrolet models, Oldsmobile models and very few Lincolns! When I sat inside that car I said to myself..."a more luxurious CAVALIER"...so many trademark GM features like the cheap steering wheel, the Cavalierish vents...yikes! If they think this model is going to be a Euro-fighter, then we can sleep in peace!

Yannis

Wow, that's harsh. Cadillac has a long way to go to be competitive (as does Lincoln), but they're trying. I was on a bus in Chicago a few weeks ago that got passed by ta CTS. Two you ng guys were pointing it out to each other, checking it out. I was quite surprised. I think it is gaining a lot of younger attention compared to Caddy's other cars.
A sports division will certainly help that. However, I think before Caddy invests in cars like the Cien, it needs to get its house in a row and build some world class sedans in the entry, mid and upper level segements.

I like the looks of this sketch and the current CTS although I don't think that I would ever buy one.
A fully optioned CTS is around $38k and this Super CTS will no doubt be in the $46k range. For that kind of cash, I would just scrape a few more dollars for a M3. But at least Cadillac is trying.

I can't wait to see what the next STS is like. I don't think that it will be a deal breaker for Caddy, but it is going to be very important for them to get it right. I kind of like the current STS myself, very clean styling inside and out.
-Drew

What demographics?" Does it attract young guys who will not be in the "upper echelon", salary-wise, or young guys who like anything styled like a domestic car (no matter how "revolutionary" Cadillac's new design is, it does look like a...domestic car!)?? In order to be successful, it will have to conquer current and future buyers from Mercedes, Audi, BMW, Volvo and even its GM partner SAAB. With an average product like the CTS and hideous looking SUVs like the Escalade, etc., it "ain't gonna happen". That crowd demands excellence, performance (not only raw HP but handling and feedback from the car to its driver) and workmanship, something that no Cadillac gives right now. This angular styling is not going to conquer this "premium" demographic group...
Yannis

I don't know about that. The Escalade has a much younger demographic. It's showing up in rap videos etc. Transferring that attraction to sedans might be a possiblity...

I doubt that Mark LaNeve would want that. And don't tell me that the "rap demographics" can afford to get such expensice vehicle, LEGALLT (you catch my drift, don't you?)...
Yannis

Well Yannis, it all comes down to what the public sees as cool. The public is fickle. Rap is viewed as very cool by the highschool and college set. Just ask the 11 year old (white) girl who I met while on the XC90 event in San Francisco. Her dad had a Jet Ski rental company in Sonoma, CA. I'd say that's a decent example of today's youth, and she was lecturing me on the difference between J.Lo and Ja Rule. She's the new MTV generation.
Bentley has a big rap following, and while they may not advertise their praise of that side of their business, I'd bet off the record they're more than happy with it. Old money dies eventually. New money is where future sales will be.
JMHO.

their build quality and reliability are going to have to increase exponentially before they even dream about competing with most european cars.
