Is this the test vehicle for the 2003 Volvo SUV or 2004 Ford Taurus?

quote:
While at first glance this photo may appear to merely be a Volvo V70, although there is more than meets the eye. The car pictured, which sports a widened front and rear track, increased ride height, and ground clearence is believed to be an early test mule with the underpinnings of the upcomming Volvo SUV or Ford Taurus.
The next Taurus will likely stray from the three-box sedan layout it has had since its introduction since 1986. The Taurus will become what Ford calls a "lifestyle vehicle," one that combines the attributes of a car, SUV, and a minivan. The resulting vehicle will ride on a new platform that may be derived from Volvo's P2X platform, currently shared by the S60, V70, and S80.
While Volvo executives are quick to point out that the cars will not share a common platform, the costs for Ford to produce the next Taurus will be lowered significanly by using existing components. Development time will be reduced, too, by adapting engineering architecture instead of starting from scratch.

-Drew

A Taurus lifestyle vehicle. Am I the only one who thinks this sounds kinda gimicky and dumb. I think its proven that family sedans sell, through SUV trends, pickup trends, sports car trends or whatever.... sedans are a staple product. The Taurus is Ford's competitor in this rather large market. What are they smoking? .... Unless they are bringing over the the Mondeo, in which case I am all for a Taurus lifestyle vehicle.
Bring on the Mondeo.

Perhaps Ford is thinking the S60 will sell better if they change the Taurus? I know I lost interest in the Taurus when they dropped the SHO, the same way my interest in (new) Volvos fizzled with the demise of the S70/V70. Just another fine example of "smart" marketing by Ford.

There has also been talk of a V70 AWD NON-XC, maybe this is that? But she does look a little jacked and wide, I wish it was a better shot and closer.

There was a V70AWD non-XC in '98 and '99, and I have one -- it was one of the last ones built, in April '99. And I specifically wanted it because I think all the pretendo cladding and decals and such that adorn the XC look dumb. I suspect I'm not alone in that view. I like having a "stealth" XC.
