My 2002 just started whining from the right rear, mostly at moderate to high speed. Not very noticable at low speed. I thought it was a wheel bearing but my friend doesn't think so. Also, do you have to buy the hub to repair wheel bearing? Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thanks

A wheel bearing going out can sound very much like tread noise on a noisy tire.

good luck,

Definitely wheel bearings. I suggest you buy OEM hubs. I had to replace 5 hubs on my 2001 in the span of two years. Aftermarket hubs do not last.

Wheel bearing is most likely. Try the "turn test".

check your rear differential fluid aswell... replaced fluid in my XC70 today and this is all that was in there

not good! I refilled it and it took the whole 0.7L before it started spilling out.. so really thats all thats been in there

previous owner had no love :(

had all 4 wheels off the ground to test the rear diff and seems to still be working...fortunately

also replaced my angle gear fluid, that was at the correct level but very black.. car has 157k miles
