So, I got my 2002 S40 ("Valdemar") in January and am absolutely in love with it!
My boyfriend drives an also-cute 2001 VW Golf, tastefully modified for some rather blistering performance and handling. We both love our cars, but until now, only HE had a website (vwvortex.com) and the modding addiction to prove it. With some good advice from y'all, and some thoughtfully chosen modifications over time, hopefully Valdemar will be able to give that smug little Golf a run for its money...
I'll put up some pics of Valdemar soon, and I'm psyched to explore these boards and see what I can learn!
Hi, and welcome. I like that you named your S40 "Valdemar". How'd you settle on his/her name? Just curious... Can't wait to see the pics.
P.S. I see you're in Cambridge. Where do you surf? On the Charles? Ha ha. (Lived there 6 years, myself...)

Welcome. I own the project Golf over at Vortex, so I'm not going to choose sides here.
The first and easiest engine mod you could perform is an ECU upgrade and maybe an exhaust. IPD has it (http://www.ipdusa.com ) as does GIAC who also sells products for VWs.
What else did you have in mind?
Good luck with the new car.

Welcome to Swedespeed! What kind of Golf does your BF have? If it is a 2.0, then you should have no problem, but if it is the 1.8t, that might pose a problem, for sure with an APR chip. IPD should be able to provide some great performance stuff for your car.
-Drew

Ah, don't worry about his Volvo Wannabe Golf! Hehehe...pour in a little bit more money into your car and you will be right there...next to him or even ahead of him reminding him who is the real boss!
BTW, interesting diary you keep! Your brain is certainly very analytical, I guess that is why you are a scientist!
Yannis

Wow, I didn't realize there was so much crossover between the VW and the Volvo enthusiast crowds!
Well, I think the first thing Valdemar will get is the little stuff: K&N drop in, and maybe a few externals like a spiffier grille. I've also got to do some repair work! Living in Cambridge means I've got on-street parking. :-( Somebody took a big chunk out of my rear passenger quarter-panel the other day, and one of my headlamp wiper blades is missing. C'est la vie.
As far as the BF goes, beating his car on the track is probably a pipe dream. He does have the 1.8T, and just recently he added Eibach springs and a 0.8 bar Wetterauer chip to the already extensive list of mods. Last night I actually helped him install a wheel-well vent, and he put in some e-code lamps, fogs, and a TT DV at the same time. Yeah, I know, helping the enemy...I should be working on Valdemar instead!! He's actually CTodd on vwvortex.com, if you want to see what Valdemar's up against. :)
I wonder how many people name their Volvos? I know my mom has named every Volvo ever that has been in the family starting with her '77 240 (Sven)and my current 850 is named Bjorn. Not sure if my spelling on the names are right but something like that. Oh, the last 240 ('82 GLT) was named Inga. It even recieved a little metal plaque on the dash with "Inga" engraved into it! I'm wondering what my next Volvo will be called?!! haha, kinda cute though, Valdemar is a good name. Sounds like you want to toughen up Valdemar into a sport compact killer! People here should be able to give you good direction on that. Welcome aboard!

Thanks! I like the name too. I just found it on a website of Swedish names, and it seemed to fit a sapphire-black S40. I think the car looks very masculine (almost BMW-esque, please don't shoot me...)! Valdemar is also the first car I've named, though I was VERY attached to my former Mazda RX-7. She was a cute little red thing, tiny (like me...I'm 5'1"!) and tempermental but SO fast. Valdemar's got a sort of heavy, growling personality that just screamed out for a name.
I do hope that over time I can make him into a fairly powerful machine. Since he's leased, I also want to buy him outright before I get too involved with the mods.

I'm pretty sure I will buy him...that was actually the plan from the get-go. I somehow wound up getting a better deal if I leased than if I bought. (Yeah, I thought it was odd too.)
In better news, my OEM load bars just arrived. Whoo-hoo! Now I don't have to put my surfboards and my bike IN the car, although impressively enough, they do fit.
Do load bars count as a mod? :p
