I am in the market for an XC and am wondering if I should be avoiding the 01's due to the "don't buy a car it's first year out" rule. In your experience with this particular car, is this true? There are some really nice 01's with lower mileage (below 50k) that seem appealing, but I'll limit my search to 02's if i need to. I am also being somewhat picky because we want a black interior, which seems to be hard to find in the XC (or any volvo for that matter). Any insight will help. Thanks.

Re: 2001 vs. 2002 V70 XC?? (855turbo95)

If you live in Tucson l would only look for a light interior because of the heat even if you live in the foothills or up in Mount Lemon. The blk interior will be like an oven during the hot months. I would also look for a light color Volvo again because the dark colors will be hurt by the sun even though you will garage it.
As far as year the XC should only be determined by condition and mileage and if it has an extended warranty from Volvo.
The warranty is the most important thing that you should look for!
Alan

I was very hesitant to buy an 01 with all the problem posts on several forums, but I jumped in anyway, and so far so good. For the price I paid ($10.5K) I could not complain and if something comes up, I'm still ahead. Car has 45K and looks like it was never driven. Best of all, it came with brand new Michilin tires and had the exact options I wanted (boosters and 3rd row). Most of the comparable XCs I was looking at were $17 - 21K for about the same year and mileage.
D-

Re: 2001 vs. 2002 V70 XC?? (JRL)

The car had previously sat for 1.5 years, so I drained the tank, replaced a defective alternator, installed new wipers and brought it to the dealer for new software upgrade, the recall for the fan, general tune up and to reset some sensors. Other than the work they did the car checked out fine and was not previously in an accident - clean bill of health. They were amazed at the price I paid since it's below auction value. This was not an Ebay and a straight cash purchase.

I had looked for a XC70 for 4 months before I found this deal and jumped on it right away. You may not get every deal out there, but I've been able to pick up a few cars with this shopping stategy over the years. While it has not worked out on all 30 cars I've purchased over the years, it does work out enough to be worth it.
Sorry to hihack this thread.
D-

For the price you paid you are OK but l would try and get a Volvo extended warranty that goes out as far as possible.
Alan
