2000 V70R engine replacement options

2081 Views 6 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  96dtm850
My V70R is in need of a new engine. Seems like headgasket around #3 is starting to give although she hasn't overheated or anything. Also I haven't been driving her to prevent further damage. No coolant oil mix at the moment, but probably a matter of time. She has high mileage and I'd like to replace the engine, but finding a B5244T2 is next to impossible.

Do I have any other engine options to know of?

Sounds like a perfect opportunity to rebuild and/or beef up some internals either for longer life or MORE POWAH.

Have you checked with Volvo & Saab dismantlers in Rancho Cordova? They're close enough to pick the motor up yourself if they have one.

Just from checking the owner's manual, the engine does have the same bore, stroke, and compression ratio as a B5234T3, (the T5 motor) which there are plenty of.

Others here will know better if that's an exact substitute, I'm not sure what the other differences are. But I suspect it comes down to the turbo and the boost (ECU). If so, then you can just use one of those for the long block. It might also have different variable cam timing.

Yea, I checked with Volvo Saab and they don't have one (B5244T2).

I've been "told" that a 2.3 T5 from a P2 platform would work due to it's variable head, but I have yet to see any hard evidence of that. I would consider a rebuild, but knowing a lot of techs in the area that work on these motors and the stories have been consistent and that is, if the headgasket goes and/or overheats, even if you put a new gasket in, it's never the same and likely to go out again. That's why I'm considering a used engine rather than simply installing a new gasket.
I just noticed there's a guy in San Francisco parting a 2000 R right now in our classifieds...

Yea, thats' CJ, he's asking 1200 for the motor. I'm still debating if I want to pull the head off and check it out for myself. With 154k on his motor....that's pretty steep.
