need to crank engine 5 or 6 times (key on then key off) before she starts. So far i've done plugs, fuel pump, throttle body done by Volvo, Crank sensor, cam sensor, cleaned MAF. Imobilizer antenna, new keys programed by Volvo. O2 sensor. Runs GREAT after it starts. Any body have any ideas?

Re: (2000 S80 hard start (Tschadt)

Dirty injectors, fuel filter? But then again i dont know if it would run smooth after with dirty injectors. Seems like you've done a lot already. Dont want to give you random ideas so you spend more money.

Just wondering if it is your ignition switch? i.e. since you seem to have to turn it on and off several times Would think dealer should be able to diagnose such a thing...

OK, it's not the ignition switch.
and to clarify, yes, the engine cranks, good spark, good fuel pressure with the new pump, If this was an old car with a distributer, I would say the timing was off. I was just at the mechanic that has the car, he put that machine on it and all sensors are with the range they should be.

He checked them with the engine off, key on, and again with the engine running. all electronics are working correctly. it's a real mind boggler. BTW, this is the 4th mechanic to have this car. 2 Volvo dealers, one independent Volvo mechanic, and now a specialist in troubleshooting.

he had the car 2 weeks and didn't look at it. I took it back.
I need to press the gas peddle to floor, release it, then it starts. Maybe a worn out throttle body?

Re: (POLSKA)

I just read on the R forum someone had a cranking problem too. Suggestion was bad battery with too little cranking amps. Have you ever replaced your batter in the X amount of years you've owned the car?

Volvo did not replace the ETM, they cleaned and installed new software. and the battery has plenty of cranking power.

Then im not sure. You might want to look at this topic. atacamaR states the same problem as yours including the pressing of the gas pedal fully then being able to start.
http://forums.swedespeed.com/zerothread?id=123018
Once he gets it fixed, if he can, hell probably post. I'd like to know what the problem is myself just in case im ever in the situation.

Maybe timing belt stretched a little, just enough for the timing to be off a little, it is due for a replacement. So here's my delema: Volvo wants $900.00 for a timing belt and tensioner, I already have a new belt and tensioner, but my local mechanic, or any other mechanic I talked to, won't do it until the starting issue is fixed. Kind of like Pa. dept.of transportation---You can't buy a car without insurance, but you can't get insurance if you don't own a car!! Stuck between a rock and a hard place!

Re: (Tschadt)

Actually i was thinking a little about that stretched belt. I think the reason they dont want to do it is because if that isn't the problem, you can say you wont pay them because of the belt not being installed properly and thats why its not working. They have no way of showing you their work is properly done.
The reason i didnt suggest it earlier was because if it was stretched wouldn't that mean the running of the car would be laggish or just abnormal. You said it runs fine once it does start.

That was my thoughts on why they won't do the belt. I think after the engine starts, the computer is smart enough to adjust the timing to make up for the stretched belt. I have ALLDATA DIY, the instructions for adjusting the tensioner are temperature related, ie: if it's 90 degrees outside, the tensioner must be set differently than if it's 30 degrees outside( yea, I know, sounds stupid), so now during the summer (it is 90 degrees here) the belt is softer and therefore stretched a little more. Just enough to cause a hard start. I don't know, I'm just "grasping at straws " at this point. one good thing, the car has never let me stranded, yet!

One more thing, during the winter, below 40 degrees, she starts like a champ, if it's 45 degrees, she struggles.

In this case, if you're due for a timing belt change, you might as well just get it done at a trusted mechanic, pay them up front so they dont worry. You need that belt done sooner or later. Maybe that will motivate them... If thats the problem everyone will learn a valuable lesson haha.

My plans exactly. I work for Autozone, I have the names of a few good mechanics. If they won't do it, it goes to the dealer. Ouch!
I will defenatly keep you guys posted.

Re: (Tschadt)

If you end up going to the dealer you might as well do it yourself. I checked the manual seems like a job manageable by someone with a little auto repair experience.
I'll probably attempt it at 180,000.
