I've been eying a few of these wagons, some with 80k miles. Question is, what work typically is needed on these cars at this mileage if it has not already been done, i.e., timing belts, front end work, shocks, etc. I'm just trying to get a feel for maintenance costs after purchase.

Also, any pre-purchase buying tips are appreciated such as particular caveats, known problems, how and where to find or see them.

Many thanks!

Re: 2000-02 V70 T5 wagon buying tips, big $ maint issues after 70K mi, etc. (Hobart)

Well, some would say to stay away from the '01's. I have an '01 T5 and it's been a good car. Of course, my trans failed at 82k, but it was a flawless vehicle up to, and following this event. There is a widespread ETM failure that plagues the P2 platform and it's looking like Volvo will repair these on their dime. You'll probably have to start looking at the swaybar links, tie-rod ends, ball joints, strut mounts (something I did), and the timing belt is due at 100k (I think...). Not all of those things above mind you, unless the car has been horribly maintained.

My 10-cents.

Timing belt is at 105k. I have a slightest leak from front crank seal that I'm nursing along to be done with the timing belt. The link in my signature represent maintanence items I've encountered. Car at 92k mi now. Big ticket item (>$500?) common failures include

- ETM on 01s (dealer is taking care of through extended warranty. But still can leave you stranded)

- Transmission. I'm starting to get some none smooth shifts now in various circumstances. For now, silky smooth in auto mode after transmission software update (stick mode has the none smooth shifts intermittently)

- Brake booster.

Hadn't noticed my suspension going yet. But we don't drive it hard and suspension deterioration is gradual. Harder for me to notice unless back to back compare with a new suspension.

Sorry, I couldn't resist - $900 to fix moon roof rattle.

See my post titled $900 to fix $#^%#&@ moon roof rattle!

I'm madder than a wet Hornet! It's not covered under the extended warranty!

Ditto. My 2001 V70 T5 just turned 70K miles and it has been virtually flawless!

I guess at 70k you're going to start seeing sping seats, timing belts, brakes, etc.
The big ticket on my car so far has been the spring seats for 400 quid.
Other than than it makes a great car for Jessica.

My '01 V70-XC just turned 75,000 miles. I just put on what I think is the third set of Perelli Scorpion S/T tires. I believe the second set went on just before I bought the car @45,000 miles, so I probably got about 35K miles on them. Shortly after I had the car I noticed a rattle in the front end, I believe it was the left tie rod was replaced to fix the problem. Seems as if I had it aligned like every six months, and its not like I drive the car off road, of course some of the highways in PA a worse than some back roads. I would check my maintenance records but the car is in the shop right now for a state inspection and the 75,000 mile service. I have had a re-occurring leak at the hose connection to the Power Steering Reservoir. I was told Volvo has come out with a Service Bulletin to replace the reservoir with an upgraded design but don't have any other information on this, will post more as information becomes available. I have also noticed a "hard shift" between 2nd and 3rd gears, more so under loads, and when you go from R to D there seems to be a longer than usual delay in engagement. Service Manager says they can't find anything wrong, no codes and can't really duplicate the symptoms, but I suspect this is early signs of ETM problems. I also am having another tie rod replaced, just got a message from the Service Manager. Since the car is a Certified Used its covered less the $50 deduct. Other than these issues the car has been great. I put about 24,000 miles a year on the car.

Timing belt change is set at 105,000 miles for this car.

I just had the A/C compressor changed ,I hardly ever run it, even in the summer, But the pully is always spining and the bearing was gone, so the bearing only comes with the rest of the compressor... 690$ canadian +2h30 labor, I got V.I.P. so who cares... 93000km

Ok here is an update to my 75,000 mile service. I had the PA state inspection and emissions test done at the same time. I also had a leak in the power steering system as well as had them look into a hard 2 to 3 shift and D to R / R to D engagement hesitation problem.

For the State Inspection it needed a left inner tie rod end (too much play). I had a sway bar replaced at the 52,000 mile service. I said before I thought it was a tie rod end but it was the sway bar.
Cost $244.83 covered under the VIP (Certified Used) Warranty.

Hose nipple on the power steering reservoir was leaking, required a new reservoir. I was told there was a service bulletin on this item but I don't see any listed on the work papers.
Cost $108.18 covered under the VIP (Certified Used) Warranty.

Transmission required a new valve body per Volvo TNN 43-46. I am not sure exactly what that is TNN is so maybe someone can clarify it. The rest of the report said "Internal fault in Transmission Valve Body, Test drive and verify condition, Hook up VIDA, No codes found - None stored. Found internal fault in valve body per Volvo TNN 43-46, Replaced valve body - No further fault at this time.
Cost $1201.55 covered under the VIP (Certified Used) Warranty.

This less my $50 deductible plus use of a car for the week it was in the shop, the warranty covered $1655.00 of the bill

When you get stuff like this you're glad you decided to by Certified Used and have a Dealership willing to do the right things.
