I guess I need to slow down, but this last ticket was total BS. He said he clocked me doing 49 in a 35, but I highly doubt this is possible since I was just turning right at a signal from a dead stop and he pulled me over less than 5 seconds later. This begs the question, approximately how fast can I have been going if it was only about 100 yards from idle and I wasn't even accelerating at full bore?
I plan to contest this ticket!

probably got you before the signal and was waiting to see if you would do anything else he could get you for (turning without signaling for example)

I got one for eating a red light, even though I was in the middle of the intersection when it was green and was yielding to traffic. Guess he needed his quota filled.

He clocked you at 49 before you made that turn. He was running your plates through his system.

The bottom line is, I don't think I could have been going as fast as he said I was. Furthermore, there is no blatantly visible posted speed limit in the immediate vicinity.
Do I have a case here?

Re: (darylkaiser30)

It seems to me that the only hope is that the cop won't show up in court. Traffic court judges always believe the cop and unless you have material evidence you are there to lose the case. Trial by written declaration seems work sometimes, since the cop won't get overtime for that, and may just not file his declaration. I had no such luck with that though, and did not get traffic school either! So I am paying over $1000 in fines and insurance for 19mph over the speed limit. And that was only for driving like a not so nice guy and drawing the cop's attention. That did learn me to respect the motorcycle cops though... Especially when they need to fill their quotas.
Are speed traps legal where you live by the way?
EDIT: The filter in this board is teh funny! M*ron changed to "not so nice guy"

I do know that WASPs around here give out a helluva lot of tickets. People are always complaining about it, especially folks from out of town. Anyhoo, the ticket I got was at a location where people speed going in the other direction. I was honestly not going that fast, and I will be the first to admit if I was actually speeding. I think he either missed the other dude or just saw my car and got really jealous. Either way, I'm not sure if I should contest the ticket or ask for a deferal so that it doesn't go on my record. I hadn't gotten a ticket for 4 years and now I have two in less than two months. State Farm is not going to like that...

In MN, the law is (and you are taught to) enter an intersection to prepare for a left turn. Doesn't matter if the light turns red while you are there. A green light means "proceed if the way is clear" effectively giving the right of way to the person already in the intersection - in other words, if you're sitting out in the intersection waiting to turn left across traffic and the light turns while you're there, the green light now facing the other direction doesn't take away your right-of-way - you were in the intersection "first" legally. The traffic that has a green light (that you're blocking temporarily) must wait for you to clear the way by finishing your turn.

Well here is a very annoying story...
Just the other day I was down at the beach by my house. Summers are packed around here with people from all over not just locals and for that reason cops are on very high alert. Since I live 2 minutes from the beach after surfing I usually leave my wetsuit or wet swim trunks on wrapped in a towell as I drive home, so I can just take a shower at home isntead of changing into my clothes at the beach. Anyways there is a little side road that goes along the beach which leads onto the main highway. I was pulling out from parellel parking onto the little side road reaching for my seat belt to buckle up before getting on the highway. RIGHT THEN A COP COMES AROUND THE CORNER GETTING OFF THE HIGHWAY AND GIVES ME A TICKET FOR NOT HAVING MY SEAT BELT ON! I had literally just pulled out of my spot and was still a fair distance from the highway. Very ridiculous if you ask me.

Re: (Heimpel)

I thought that in CA, you can't get a ticket for only a seatbelt violation...but that they had to stop you for another infraction and then the could cite you if you weren't smart enough to have your belt on before they came to your door.

I agree about seatbelt violations... i always drive with mine on, the thing that made me angry was the fact that I had just pulled out of my parking spot on a road where people drive 15 mph... I was reaching for it to put it on before I got on the main highway and the officer came around the corner and caught me in the act of reaching. The law must be if you are moving you must be buckled. 5 mph is definately moving... guilty as charged.
